Next Move?

Puig's escape from Cuba is worthy of a Tom Clancy (RIP) novel. He was a live wire, more or less out of control off the field, when he was a first-year pro in Chattanooga coming to terms with having money.

He also had 37 RBI in 40 games. While I worry about his injury history of late, I consider that Fredi might be one of the few managers in baseball who could connect with the kid -- or be able to pass a summary judgement on whether or not he'd be an asset. If the Braves had a healthy Puig for two years, then they would have a potential five-tool talent in hand.

I do wonder if Olivera and forgotten Brave Adonis Garcia have leadership qualities in regards to Hispanic players.

Let's not forget our manager is Cuban, wonder if he would have any influence over Puig

Pretty much agree. Aybar and Maybin are definitely on the block, but the return has to be right, especially for Aybar. He is a candidate for a QO after this season, so the return for him has to be good enough to give up that potential draft pick.

Markakis might look appealing to a contender who needs a complimentary bat for the OF.

And you're right, the Braves will be in a position to eat a lot of money at the dealine, which would sweeten the return quite a bit. The Braves could be a one-stop-shop for cash strapped contenders looking to add pieces without taking on payroll.

The guy is going to be 32 after next season. He is making $8.5 mil this year....do you really want to pay him $16 million for 2017? If I am Aybar and I am offered the QO, I happily accept the second the offer is extended, you don't have to wait for the deadline for my decision.

You don't extend the QO, try to sign him to a short extension, but let him go if someone throws out more money/years. Then get a stop gap ahead of Albies.

Would anyone trade Miller for Puig? They're close to the same age. They're both under contract for 3 more years. They both have top notch ceilings. Both have risks attached (Miller might regress, Puig has health and clubhouse concerns).

Seems like that would be the basis for a trade. Not sure the Braves have any interest in taking on the Puig Show though.

Absolutely not (for me). The only player I would be less interested in adding to a clubhouse full of young kids you're trying to develop is Hanley - Puig looks to be every bit as disrupting as Ramirez without the high salary.

If they're truly willing to move both Miller AND Julio (and weren't looking for Frazier), I'd much rather take Baez (and all his strikeouts) straight-up for Julio and De Leon, Verdugo, and another piece for Shelby. De Leon and Newcomb should be ready to step into the rotation by 2017 as replacements, Barnes is all but a finished product ready to take Bethancourt's place if he doesn't take that last step this year, and Verdugo provides competition for Davidson to replace Markakis at some point.

2017:

CF- Smith, SS- Aybar (if re-signed)/Castro/Albies (if ready), 1B- Freeman, 3B- Baez, RF- Markakis/Verdugo, LF- Olivera, C- Bethancourt/Barnes, 2B- Peterson/Castro

Rotation: Newcomb, De Leon, Wisler, Sims, Banuelos/Folty/Jenkins/Perez/Weber

All kinds of money to work out extensions for anyone you choose and (gasp) bid on Wieters/Jose Bautista/Jay Bruce/Carlos Gomez/Strasburg/Matt Moore if you need someone like that to create "buzz" with the fanbase.

I think I am more on Soler than Baez.. but I probably could be convinced other wise..

I would go for both. Teheran and Miller for Baez and Soler. We get very promising cost controlled position players, they get cost controlled pitching and a World Series championship. Or three.

I understand the thinking behind this..BUT... i would think we could get more than Baez and Soler for those 2, no?

I'm not sure they will trade Shelby or Teheran. I think they wanna build the rotation and bullpen strong enough to with stand the offense.

I'll bet they do. Now that he's torn out the framing, he needs to just gut it to the ribs. I'd just like to see a couple hitters coming the other way. One more AA pitching prospect "with a great arm, just needs work on his secondary pitches and get his BB/9 under 6.0" and I'm gonna commit Harry-Caray.
