NL Rookie of the Year Watch

exactly why giving a competitive advantage to a team for some biased voting by idiots is a really dumb idea.. if this was closer and the Brave's 2 beat idiots were the deciding vote, then how dumb would baseball look..

Great for Drake, he deserved it and I am glad the Braves are the ones who get the advantage... but this is beyond stupid and I hope it changes in short order.
Both Chicago beats had votes too so

exactly and voted for their guy. it is completely biased and shouldn't carry a competitive advantage for a team. Those guys didn't vote on who was the best rookie, they voted on the guy the got to watch the most and just cast their ballot (chicago guys)

I don’t usually care about these end of season awards, but now that there’s a pick at stake I do. Good to see the writers aren’t complete morons.

how is that determined? does record play into account?
The PPI picks are immediately after the first round. Houston also gets one for Hunter Brown being a top 3 Cy Young finisher - I don’t know how they determine if ours or theirs is first.

But instead of being 31/32, we move up because multiple teams will have their picks dropped 10 spots for luxury tax reasons. Dodgers and Mets for sure. I saw a draft guy I trust say ours is 28th so I’m mostly going with that.

As a Braves fan, I will enjoy being the beneficiary of it and will save my bitching for when a Brave doesn’t win it

Here’s the more complete answer: “The Blue Jays, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies and Yankees exceeded the second competitive-balance tax threshold, which means their first pick will get moved down 10 spots.”

Dodgers, Blue Jays, Phillies and Yankees dropping 10 each all move us up. With all four of those dropping, that likely means the Astros get 27 for Brown and we get 28 for Baldwin.

Last year, 28 overall was worth $3.2 million and slot values increase every year.

that is some good stuff

The slot value is a big deal also. Adding another almost 4 million to the draft pool is crazy. If I'm AA I'm trying my best to get another 1st round CB pick in trade. I'm wondering how AA will approach WO free agents now

If the Braves don't sign a QO and get a top 5 pick, then they would have that pick, the ~28th pick and then again around ~35 depending on when those playoff teams over the 2nd tier get slotted.
I'd still try to trade for another comp pick and just blow the draft out. Especially bc I know AA is gonna trade several players away we have now.

wait… Astros get an extra first rounder for Hunter Brown?… who was called up in 2022

What a bizarre concept. Baseball is run like it’s a carnival

Can you imagine if the Braves beat writers voted for someone else and it cost them the award?

Basically writers should not vote on these if there is something at stake is the upshot.

at least for the teams that are involved. I mean, I am sure beat writers for the Brave's would be hard pressed to vote for a Dodger or Philly unless it was clear cut..

again, very glad the Braves got this pick.. could be a big deal come draft time (hopefully)..

but if they are going to give a team a competitive advantage, then it needs to be more biased proof some how.

Also worth pointing out that the lottery only matters for the first round. We will pick 9th in every round after the first - we currently have sixth best odds but you have to add back in the three teams who were ineligible for a top 10 pick in the lottery (Rockies, Nationals, Angels.)

There’s going to be a lot of extra picks between round one and two. Between PPI, the qualifying offer picks and competitive balance, that was a total of 16 extra picks last year. So if you’re picking ninth in the second round, that pick was actually 52 overall last year.
