Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

Olney has a big insider piece today that I can't read (because I'm not an ESPN Insider, not because I'm illiterate), but the preview ESPN does allow you to read includes Olney report that "there is a growing belief" that Freeman will sign elsewhere once the lockout ends.

What are the consensus thoughts on us not giving Freddie an unfavorable deal, trading for Olson and then signing another big bat ?
Like a FA shortstop just maybe?

The issue is there isn't really another "big bat" to sign without giving them an unfavorable deal. So if I'm handing out a bad deal, I'm going to give that deal to Freeman.

The choice is probably Freeman plus a scrap heap OF like Pham, or Olson/Rizzo plus a better OF like Conforto. There is really no "big bat" in the OF to use the cash saved by going cheap at 1B (No, I don't consider Bryant an option since I see him as the biggest albatross to be signed this FA period).

If AA somehow flips the script and replaces Swanson with Correa/Story, and then trades for Olson...I would be absolutely shocked beyond words.

I'm a little worried about our handedness if we don't sign Freeman. Especially given that the alternatives being floated around are guys like Olson, Correa, Story, Bryant, etc. All right handed additions to a lineup that already has Riley, Swanson, a handful of right handed catchers, Ozuna, Duvall, Acuna, and Albies who is much more effective from the right side.

The reason I'm so big on an Olson trade is I've always wanted AA to take advantage of the As valuing 1-2 win players with lots of control to get a guy like Olson.

These bat-first players typically command less in trades than folks tend to think, and if I'm the As, I'm cashing out the peak value at a position I know I can fill cheaply. They won't be able to replace Olson, but 1B is the prime position teams like the As can get 2-3 wins for pennies.

So my preference for Olson hinges on the fact I think AA can get him for guys we won't really miss.

My A+ offseason for AA would be to get Olson for what we consider spare parts, signing Conforto to a 1 year deal, and then adding a cheap #4 to soak up 120+ IP (Cueto intrigues me).

I think that roster is once again a true WS contender.

I think you are probably looking at a Schwarber\Bryant FA deal as long as first rounders don't get taken away. They likely would get 3-4 years.

I don't think that's happening with the upcoming draft/remaining FA's. Could be wrong but those things usually don't go into effect until the following offseason.

Olson is a lefty sir.

Cueto is very good when he pitches.

Thats the problem......

MLB Trade Rumors chat is pretty adamant that "our" top prospects are pretty much worthless in any trade proposal for Olson. Even with Olson coming from Oakland. CLV may go berserk when he reads Pache and Waters wont even get a bag of balls in return.

To clarify, here's what was actually said regrading Olson and/or the Braves prospects:

Matt
2:07 If Braves let Freeman go what is right trade package for Olson a Georgia boy? Waters, Pache, Contreras and Muller for Olson and Kemp?
Steve Adams
2:07 The stock on Waters and Pache is way down.
2:08 Not saying they couldn't be a part of the deal, but they're probably not headlining it together. Looking more at Harris or Langeliers and then plenty of talent thereafter. Teams are increasingly reluctant to part with Top 50 and Top 25 types of prospects, but I do think the A's have a chance to get someone of that caliber in return for Olson, and I don't think they'd look favorably on a collection of prospects whose value has been trending in the wrong direction.

AA
2:30 Pache, Contreras, Shewmake for Bryan Reynolds…who says no??
Steve Adams
2:31 Pache, Waters and Contreras are the latest relatively fallen Braves prospects their fans are anxious to trade, I see. Last year it was Kyle Wright, Touki Toussaint, Bryse Wilson, etc.
If you want Reynolds, Mullins, Olson, etc. -- whichever premium trade target you're looking for... the guys who you're now OK trading because their stock has gone the wrong direction generally isn't a great place to start.

This is far different than saying they are worthless, and what Adams actually saying is what we already know...Waters and Pache have lost a lot of value. I've never been a Waters fan, and the "Pillar floor" for Pache was always a stupid thing to say, but I have been surprised by Pache's crash and would be hesitant to sell low on him.

While I agree with Steve's general sentiment (that Reynolds proposal is laughably bad), I disagree that Olson is going to require premium talent. We've seen the As trade enough star MLB players to understand they don't always target the top end prospects, and instead focus on getting several MLB-caliber players instead. Guys like Touki, Wright, Contreras, etc are just the types of guys the As seem to collect when they trade away established MLB players.

If AA can turn a package including anyone not named Lango or Harris into Olson, I think it will be a good trade for the Braves. I would not enjoy seeing Pache traded for 2 years of a 1B, but I would understand if it happened. I suspect some team is going to unlock the mystery that is Touki (and to a lesser extent Wright), and that team may very well be the As.

Probably depends what we do. Do we go for Olson and an outfielder plus a vet SP? Do we sign Rizzo to a short-term deal, and go for one of the stud shortstops plus an outfielder? Do we move Riley to 1B, and sign Bryant plus an outfielder or SP? Plenty of options if we dont sign Freddie.

I totally agree re the valuation trend of Pache and Waters, but I see no reason to think Contreras’ value is trending down. His AAA stats, plus underlying metrics at MLB, all point to a very good hitting guy who can probably also catch.

The problem is that the further these conversations go, the less attractive they become. Without even starting down the road of questioning valuations, it's incredibly hard to understand the reasoning for "gutting" the top end of the system for Olson - regardless of whether Pache/Waters/Contreras/Langeliers/Harris EVER reach anything close to their ceilings.

If the supposed cash windfall from winning the Series is actually there - and you're NOT going to spend it on Freeman - why not splurge on Scherzer rather than talking Morton into coming back? You're spending $40 million either way. If there's extra money lying around and you've completely lost faith in Pache/Waters and are willing to trade guys like Langeliers and Harris for 2 years of Olson rather than giving Freeman too many years, why not sign Rizzo to a short-term deal, add another OF or SP, and hold onto your depth.

If you're trading that type of talent (that isn't even 23 years old yet) for 2 seasons of Olson, why didn't you spend the "excess cash" on guys like Scherzer/Marte/Seager/etc. rather than throw away all your depth on someone you'd control for two years? If there are REALLY as many teams interested in trading for Olson as it seems and you supposedly have extra cash lying around to spend, why not gut the system for Olson and spend that money on a much better CF like Marte or SP like Scherzer if you could have gotten them for the same number of years they signed for? All those are impossible to explain away as anything other than win-now moves. Bringing Freddie back would likely be defined as the same, - just as gutting the top of the system for two years of Olson to keep from signing Freeman for 6 years would.

(I'm not inferring I know or understand that answer by any stretch - just an honest question.)

The issue with Conforto is he declined a qualifying offer. So he potentially costs a pick
