Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

I just watched an hour long condensed version of our postseason run. Man, what a run that was. I feel like I didn’t appreciate it enough while it was happening, even though I had been waiting 26 years for it to happen. Duvall’s grand slam was the most chill-inducing moment for me, even though we ended up losing that game.

That Duvy grandslam at the time was like THE stamp of the aura of invincibility we had that was too good to be true.

A team of league average hitters isn't going to go very far, especially when your league average hitters occupy traditional offensive posiitions like 1b and LF. Bottom 5 in both position. Sure you replace value with positive production from SS and 2B, but it's a healthy drop off.

Here's where they wound up. 14th in wRC+, 15th in BsR, 18th in defensive fWAR, 19th in fWAR for pitchers, 19th in ERA-. Basically across the board they were average. So finishing around .500 is what you should expect.

I could go on further. Padres are not a bad team, they are a shocking year from Hosmer or Myers from being a good squad coupled with good pitching help. But odds are they'll be another around .500 team unless they get 2-3 player playing above form.

They weren't a team of a average hitters. They had 2 really good hitters, a couple of above average hitters, and several averageish hitters. And their starters got on base extremely well.

Hitting wasn't their issue. It was a starting rotation that couldn't stay healthy, and wasn't especially great even when they were healthy. Obviously, you can't predict health for pitchers, but a staff that includes Darvish, Snell, Clevinger, and Musgrove has the potential to be pretty dominant.

Yea the injuries to their starting pitching really ruined their season. They lost nearly the whole rotation at one point.

The windows in the rooms at the Omni literally rattled with that roar - talk about blowing the roof off of an outdoor stadium, *amn!!!

They literally were 14th in baseball in wRC+. Want some more stats? 16th wRAA. 14th wRC. 16th wOBA. You're right they're not a team of league average hitters, I'm being intentionally ****ty. But they literally were below average as a team last year. A starting 1B and RF with wRC+ of 102 and 109 isn't a recipe for success. Even if you have one of thebest offensive short stops in the game and very good offensive 2B.

BTW just for fun. here's the Padres rankings per position where qualified.

Catcher - DNQ - They use a platoon, but for that one I'll compare the overall, C 22 of 30
1B - 22 of 26
2B - 7 of 25
3B - 7 of 19
SS - 1 of 26
LF - 16 of 20
CF - 9 of 13
RF - DNQ 20th out of 30

There's basically 3 positions they were average or above average at. When your starter is scraping average, your bench guys wind up driving you down.

It’s impossible to judge changes in physique from behind while wearing at least 2 layers of clothing.

Everything credible I’ve read about Harris alway lead me to believe he’d be a Duvall type defender…good in a corner, passable in CF.
