Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

I would roll with a Duvall/Joc platoon. That would also help not break one of them down over a full year in CF.

I know Pache's defensive stats are promising (to say the least), but he has looked awkward and terrified out there at the Major League level. Worrisome.

I'd agree - He was super young so I'd want to see him out there for longer.

There was too much talk about his plus plus defense for it to evaporate so quickly.

At the very least it would prove hilarious to watch casual fans complain about how mediocre those guys are in a large sample after clamoring for them to be kept due to a few good weeks.

We have Fried and Soroka for 3 more years

Riley for 4 years and Anderson for 5

Reynolds is under control for 4 more years. There is an argument for going for it big over the next 3-4 years.

What does our depth look like afterwards if we are giving up something like Strider/Grisson/Harris/Schuster?

Thats the type of package its going to take.

It wouldn't look good. I don't think I would do it. But there is an argument for maximizing your current window even if it shortens it. If the Braves just hadn't won I would be more opposed to it. Keep the window open as long as possible. But they did win and I'm greedy.

I almost look at it the opposite way.

The next year or two is gravy. I want to be good now for a long time.

I have confidence that the core talent we have now is good enough to win next year as long as we compliment it with two big FA bats.

Last team from National League winning back to back.

1975-76 Reds
1975: Reds defeat Red Sox, 4-3
1976: Reds defeat Yankees, 4-0

This is the boat Im in as well. Now that we won a title, just try to remain good for years to come. Absolutely resist temptation to shorten the window by going "all in" when we know how flukey the playoffs are.

I’ve long stated 3/90 with an option is what I would pay for a 1B in his 30s.

However, I lack a lot of context and data AA has access to. Maybe they have analysis that shows he won’t age like a typical 1B. Maybe they have data that shows he benefits the club financially in some unique way. Maybe they know payroll will be $200M 3 years from now, so there’s plenty of room to overpay a declining 1B in the future.

We’ve all seen the data about aging guys at 1B, but the best chance to win for the next 2-3 years may very well be tied to the fact that it will hamper the chances to win in 2025 and beyond. If the plan is to take on a mini rebuild after Fried and Morton are gone anyways, maybe paying Freeman huge money in the last couple years of his deal while the team rebuilds isn’t so bad.

This.

5/$140 million is a ton, but I'm sure there are other financial benefits to having him finish here. Combine that with the fact that both Morton and d'Arnaud got multi-years (granted, Charlie's second year is an option) and it just seems like they're looking at the Fried/Riley control as the optimum time to take a shot to hang MULTIPLE flags. Don't forget they also signed Ozuna through 2025.

It just looks like they're convinced they can win one or two more Titles with this core and the complementary pieces already in the organization. If Shewmake/Grissom prove capable of competently replacing Dansby and one or two of Pache, Waters, Harris, or Franklin can contribute at all it's tough to argue that they're wrong.

One reason is the assumption that some if not all of Ozuna’s money will not have to be paid in 2022 due to a coming suspension.

Another is that Acuna and Ozzie will start to cost more in coming years.

Finally there is the idea of paying for production as you get it, as opposed to deferring some of the cost to future years. A typical Freeman season would be worth $40MM. He’s more likely to be worth that next year than he is to be worth $30MM plus at the end of a five year deal. I understand the concern about inflation as well as the time value of money. The front load is more about preserving the competitive window for a little longer.

Even ignoring time value of money, our roster is such that we should be contending now... and front loading Freddie's deal makes it hard for us to add to our roster now, which hurts our chances of winning now, which is what our roster is set up to do.

100% agree with this.

I think Verlander winds up in LA or Anaheim

was driving today and listening t MLB radio go on and on about Verlander and Max. I thought, if somehow we could get Soler, Rosario, Freeman, and add Max (for 2 years)....wow...with Acuna & Soroka coming back, what a team that would be.
