Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

Even if AA has talked to say the Pirates and they have a deal for Reynolds that both sides can live with AA can’t pull the trigger bc he may need the prospect capital to use on Olson instead. The Freeman saga needs to be settled ASAP one way or the other. Give Freddie 3 days to accept your offer or you’re moving on. AA can’t let this keep playing out.

AA almost has to let FF make the first move unless he is willing to be held up by every potential trade partner. Moving on, lets assume FF moves on. What do we have to give for Reynolds? Certainly Heredia is not the primary CF and Duvall would not be ideal, lots of load to bear for Pache. Then there is 1b to settle so what would you think of Swanson plus for Olson. Use Arcia at SS, bring back Adrianza then see what deadline situation looks like.

Last season was Wilson's final option year - if he were still here he would just be in the way and would have had to be released anyway. The Pirates are going to have to keep him on their MLB roster unless they choose to let him go.

Wound up being a swap of guys likely to be released.

Which is what happens when you start a guy's "option clock" too early by bringing him up to make a few spot starts a couple of years before the 40-man rules kick in (or is appropriate developmentally). Wilson was drafted the same year as Anderson and was in the majors two years before Anderson was. I get that the Braves thought "Well, Wilson is who he is and he's reached the end of his development arc as a mid-ceiling guy, so option/40-man issues matter less." I see the same thinking with Elder (who the Braves didn't bring up) But I think it's different with Strider--who I think has a higher ceiling and thus warrants more development time--but the Braves brought him up to throw a couple of meaningless innings and then not put on the post-season rosters.

I don't do much hand-wringing over the state of the 40-man roster. There's always someone who can be DFAd with little consequence. Starting guys option clocks is a different issue and for whatever reason, the Braves aren't concerned with that and I think that can lead to some short-sighted decisions.

Why on God's green earth would Oakland take Dansby in an Olson deal??? They're trying to cut salary - if they took Swanson back, they'd save about $2 million, and they'd lose him following this season.

I hate it when people call trade offers "stupid", but thinking they'd do a deal like that is just that - sorry.

They don't have three days - the physical would have to be completed today and the deal announced before midnight. Otherwise, Alex has no choice other than to keep talking to Oakland during the lockout - he can't talk to Rizzo.

I think you’d be in trouble at the deadline and be several games back. We won’t catch lightning in a bottle the way we did last year ever again. If Arcia is a starter here for anymore than a few games while Swanson is hurting then we are in trouble. Our options are these imo. Keep Freeman and trade for an outfielder or trade for a 1b and sign an outfielder. We can’t make 2 trades. Some team is offering more than us for Freeman I’d suggest. So Freeman is hoping AA ups his offer to 6 years so he can come back. But if AA isn’t going to do that then we need to part ways and fill the hole before options start coming off the board. Olson and Rizzo are our only 2 and Rizzo is a big step backwards.

Yeah I was meaning once the lockout is over and people can start talking again.

Why can't he talk to Rizzo? I agree about Freeman though, enough is enough. Either sign him or announce you are moving on

Such a meaningless response from the one who consistently poses worthless and impossible diatribes. Unless your glasses need replacement the word plus is there for consideration. Swanson and Olson are the key components but just look a bit farther down the line and maybe AA takes Andrus back, maybe Oakland could use Contreras since they lost Gomes. Maybe Pache could fill Canha's spot. Etc, Etc.

Why? Does it really matter just how weak your number 9 hitter is and especially with the DH added to the lineup?

Morosi: Freddie Freeman is the superstar free agent to watch today. While many have expected him to return to Atlanta, the Yankees and Dodgers are among the teams with interest, as @JonHeyman has noted. Freeman also could fit the Red Sox. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Why not both Olson and Freeman? Olson has played OF in the past (not a lot) and there is a DH too so you can fit his bat in the lineup somewhere...

I assume the Braves have the medicals on Freeman already as opposed to bringing in someone else

On the one hand, yes. On the other hand, I don't think a major league team can sign Freeman to the kind of contract we're talking about without giving him a physical. It's like buying a car from a family member -- if it's a $500 beat up Honda Civic, OK, you can skip the trip to the mechanic. If you're giving your sister $50,000 for her Tesla, you want that thing checked out, even though it's your sister and you know the car pretty well already.

And it's not like Freeman has been completely healthy over the past few years. You probably want to check out the elbow and some other trouble spots.

Exactly. But at the same time, if the Braves, Atlanta and Chipper mean all that to FF then a handshake deal would be very meaningful dollar wise. Then his team of choice could go ahead and fill other voids via trade.
