If he'd taken that deal and played to the end of it he'd beat Satchel Paige's record.
yes, I see it.. I see what you did

His agents/reps told him he's gonna hit FA. Honestly he could probably get more as a FA. He'll be 26 when he's a FA, dont think it's unreasonable to say he could get 450-500 million.
On the Nats side, what do you do here? Trade him for a bounty, or hope you can win the bidding war in 3 years. Tough one. IF there arent gonna be any QO in the new CBA, they probably have no choice but to move him.
Nats just won the world series, I would build a team around him to try and win now, then blow it up in 2 years. No one can offer enough to replace Soto's value now, he makes too little money for his output. Unless the Angels offer you Trout or the Padres offer you Tatis Jr. or Jays offer Vladdy you're not likely to get value back trading him now. IN another year or 2 you would. But you're not getting close to his value now.
Nats are in a bad spot. It seems Soto is betting on himself and willing to go year to year to maximize his earnings. More power to him. With that being the case and the Nats likely to be bad in the foreseeable future I suspect Juan gets traded next offseason or at the 2023 trade deadline. Nats should be able to get a pretty good return when he's at 1.5 to 2 years left. I agree that his value right now is likely more than any team would truly want to give up. 1.5 to 2 years will make it more manageable from that perspective.
Word is that Soto declined a 13 year / $350m extension from Washington before the lock out. That is a huge number to turn down.

Nats are rebuilding. So even if Soto gets money he doesn’t wanna be on Nationals while they’re rebuilding. Rebuilds are never a guarantee. You never know if it’s 2 years or 5 years.
Moving Soto would be the type of move that would accelerate the rebuild dramatically. And honestly, if you are going to strip down, might as well commit and do a full strip down. Trade Strasburg and anyone else you don't see being involved in 4 years or so. Corbin is border line

Also in Soto's case he already won a ring early. He wants that big payday and worry about second ring later. Soto grew up a Braves fan. Bring him home AA.
Yep, and since flags fly forever I'm sure Nats fans are going to love staring at that flag while their team loses 90 games.
With the Braves having won the WS last year, I gotta say that I definitely feel satisfied as a fan. So maybe the "flags fly forever" joke you keep running out doesn't have the same punch you think it does.
I didn't know if I would see another title in Atlanta in my lifetime. I accepted the fact that we are a mid market team and the chances of us winning are significantly lower because of that.
So yeah, I gotta say, eff everything else. After the fact, I would absolutely be ok with AA making whatever moves necessary to so I could have that feeling. Nothing can take away how amazing that was last year. If AA told us today he made a deal with the devil to get us that WS win and we would be terrible the next 5-6 years because of that, I would be ok with it.
I guess that's the difference in opinions. I would much rather have them lose in the playoffs, and then be entertained by a good team for 5-6 years.
I suppose I don't put as much weight on other people accomplishing a goal I know I have 0% impact upon, and I simply want to be entertained as often as possible. I mean, that's why I turn the game on every day. I think that's why I refuse to say "we" (and think it's absurd when others do) when I talk about the teams I am following.

This is weird to me. the ultimate goal of any competition is to win. Regardless if you contributed to the victory or not, I would think your goal would be for your team to ultimately win over the other teams you care less about. If it is not, then why even be a fan of a team. Just watch all the games and be entertained and not really have an allegiance. I mean, I get your point to an extent. I am not an Alabama football fan that determines how next year will be based on the results of the iron bowl. But the Braves winning the WS was WAY better than them losing to the Astros or Dodgers. I know I didn't have a hand in anyone one of those victories, but it doesn't deminish how it made me feel.
I think I fall somewhere in the middle of you and Carp. No, I don't want a deal with the devil (basically the Marlins) but I am a bit pissed when I reflect back to the amounts of hours I watched the 90's and 00's braves and they only won it all once. I felt we were better than the Yankees on a few of those losses but we will be remembered as second best.
