Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

How many wins would this upgrade provide the Braves over their readily available options and do you think that matters in whether they make the playoffs or not considering its almost a certainty they would be in the mix on one of the best starters at the deadline with the saved cash?

Regardless of what our roster looked like, when has AA not gone into a season with a considerable amount of money to spend for in-season additions? We literally talk about it everywhere. Greinke won't affect whether or not AA has enough cash for a major mid-season addition.

Not to mention, the first half of the season is just as important as the 2nd half. If we are required to trade for a starter at the deadline, there are 15-20 starts between the start of the season and that time. Getting sub par production from these prospects during that time could quite literally be the difference in making the playoffs and not, in a division that will likely be pretty tough.

THe difference between a guy like Grienke and what we have would probably be at most 2 wins.

I think the team is good enough to plan for postseason series.

Those numbers are made up, but either way, 2 wins is likely to be pretty important in a tough division.

Ahh, yes, the stars and scrubs approach to roster building. Already tried and failed by several teams.

Sorry, I prefer the no scrubs approach to roster building, and the low volatility it provides. You may want to look it up. FG did a nice analysis.

If Grienke was worth more than that then he would be getting paid 20M a year.

Do you mean 2 wins as in WAR or 2 actual wins on the season? Because that isn't the same. And a full 2 WAR more is pretty substantial. For reference, in 2021 that was the difference between Drew Smyly and Ian Anderson.

He doesn't know what he means. He has now reached the point in his arguing pattern where he's simply digging in and making things up to fit is point.

He will continue to double down until we get bored and forget he said it.

Depending on how the Braves track buy outs, the current payroll is about $142M. I have no idea how they will project revenue in 2022 and beyond, but I would not be surprised at any 2022 payroll value under $180M. That leaves around $35M-$40 to spend with a hole in LF, the rotation, and a bench bat.

They could do Greinke ($10M), Conforto ($20M) and Joc ($10M) I think. That would be a pretty stout roster.

I'm not a fan of Grienke.

I'd like Conforto. He turned down the QO, so I can't see him taking less than 20 for one year. I wonder if you could get him for 2/30 with a team option for 20. LH hitter who walks. I think his low bar for him is a 105 wrc+ and a good shot you are going to be in the 120s.

Can Joc play CF?

Would the royals give Minor away just to save the 10 million? I think he has upside to get back to a 2 to 2.5 WAR guy.

I think this holds value but do you think the the difference in Grienke and the availalbe options is substantial? Is there value to the organization long term to give these guys a chance? How does that weigh into the decision?

No - In total WAR.

Your comparison of Smyly and Anderson is a good one and is worth considering when making a decision moving forward. I don't think Grienke will be as good as anderson and I think our options internally will be at worst Smyly from last year.

I would probably pass on Conforto honestly unless it's a 1 year deal or a 2 year deal at a substantially lower AAV. 1/20 would be ok considering the risk. Rather have Soler though.

Reds writer on the athletic suggested it is possible reds would package Luis Castillo with Akiyama to get him off the books. I'd be interested in that if the cost does not include contreras or Harris.

Send Herredia over and Akiyama could be the defensive replacement.

I think the downside mitigation is substantial, which is the name of the game for contenders.

At the end of the day this is more nuanced than SP vs no SP. For example, if signing a SP means no money for deadline upgrades, I obviously don't want a $10M SP. Or if signing a SP means we get an opening day OF of Ozuna/Heredia/Duvall with Arcia at DH, I obviously don't want to spend $10M on a SP.

With Ozuna at DH and Acuna out to start the season, I want a real OFer like Conforto. Like you, I want him on a 1 year deal.

I think Soler is going to make more than we thought to be a primary DH.
