Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

AA said something on the broadcast about arbitration that really confused me. It was just a passing comment about how busy things have been, but he said they don’t do much with arbitration, they just “let the lawyers” do it. I don’t even have the slightest clue how that could play out, but he was emphasizing how little his group has to do with it.

Pretty much everyone seems to hate the arbitration process. I would have guessed that teams and players would have been motivated to try and find something else, but it seems pretty thoroughly entrenched at this point.

Pham to Reds for 7.5 million

It's $6M this year and a $1.5M buyout next year, so just a little more than I expected.

While I still prefer that to giving Rosario 2/18, it's certainly not something to cry over. However, if Rosario at $9M vs Pham at $6M prevents AA from getting a back end SP, then I think it was clearly the wrong move.

The question is what back end starter is out there?

I wanted no part of Grienke at 8 million and he got 13.

I think we're hoping for an Anibal Sanchez type pickup as final roster cuts are made. I expect that whoever it is will not work out nearly as well as Anibal did.

Agree. I think we'll get someone for 1 million. Maybe a cut. Maybe a Sanchez Scraph heap special. We have had some success there, like we did with Sanchez.

I’m genuinely curious how much AA is holding back for mid-season upgrades. I think the roster is in really good shape as is, but there are obvious soft spots that will likely need to be addressed during the season.

We went after Cruz and Soler so we know the money is there. I think if a difference maker becomes available he’ll pull the trigger.

My guess is AA will be in the market for the top SPs available, as well as a bat for the OF when everyone realizes Duvall and Rosario aren't cutting it.

And he will have the funds to get both.

He’s in a good place for once where he can eat the money and lessen the prospect package.

If we can make the money work, I wouldn't mind taking on Jake Odorizzi as our 5th starter. Houston would need to kick in a bit off cash, as it looks like he has some innings pitched incentives and a 3.5 million buyout at the end of the season. Odorizzi really has no spot once McCullers comes back. I imagine they would like to find someone to take as much of his remaining contract as they can.

He's been pretty reliable over the years as a mid to back end SP. About to turn 32 in a couple days, but he probably still has enough juice left in the tank to fill out the 5th spot of a rotation.

I think it's pretty telling what the mood is on Pham around the league. He's 34 and in clear decline so he's a risky proposition. And the risk isn't even about the money. I think a lot of teams didn't want to bring him, rely on him to be good, and then have him collapse on them.

The Reds are a perfect fit for him. The Reds aren't doing anything this year so they're not risking anything but the money in signing him. If he does well they can trade him at the deadline, if he's terrible then oh well.

Pham was hurt and trash from a fantasy perspective the two times I've had him for a bit.

I don't know about real life but can't say I've been hugely impressed watching him either.

Less than 2 weeks to the season and Conforto still hasn't signed. Pretty obvious Boras blew this one. Teams didn't want to give up a pick for a year 1 deal. Should have accepted the QO. Either way, will be interesting to see how much of the season he has to miss.

Boras is hoping for an injury to somebody so he can bend a team over.

Isn’t there a time when compensation isn’t attached any more. At some point the draft order is official. I could see him being a good deal when he finally ends up signing.

Yes, after the draft. They pushed the draft back to July this year so he will have to miss over half the season and get way less than the amount of the qualifying offer.

Cueto? But yeah, really nothing out there anymore.

There were guys who could have helped though.

As strange as it seems, I'm at least willing to believe this was the plan all along - at least after the Freeman situation finally came into focus. I'm now convinced that anything the talking heads float about potential moves under Alex are no more based in "fact" than ideas posters here come up with - those guys are simply guessing like we are. NOBODY saw the Jansen signing coming no matter what they say after the fact - the Yates signing was the one everyone saw as adding to the pen for the stretch run.

Don't misunderstand - I'm sure Alex ran through all the potential scenarios involving signing or trading for more starting pitching. While there may have been several seemingly better options, Wright/Ynoa/Davidson/Muller/Strider/Elder/Tarnok aren't exactly garbage as back-end pieces - ESPECIALLY when you consider how deep this pen is. With the Jansen addition Snitker will now be able to call on guys like McHugh/Minter/Thornburg in the 5th inning, and even earlier once Yates is healthy. I think waiting to address a potential 4th postseason SP until we see what kind of step forward the young arms take will wind up being the right move in the long run.

I think he correctly surmised that he needed to get the lineup "settled" first - the Olson deal HAD TO be made, one OFer HAD TO be added, and making the pen even deeper made everything that much easier. Acuna will be back sooner rather than later and Waters and/or Harris could become really nice additions to the mix in the second half. Rosario and Duvall can play either corner if they decide they don't want Ozuna to play defense. You've got Tromp and Contreras for catching depth and Contreras is athletic enough that he could be an option on the corners if needed. Assuming health, there should be no reason Alex has to address the lineup come deadline time when getting an impact bat ALWAYS seems to be more expensive than adding a competent SP. We may never see a situation where anyone is able to add the type of impactful offensive talent on the cheap that he did last year - that was just the perfect storm, and to be completely honest unbelievably lucky.

With Fried and Morton already on board, this team doesn't need another frontline guy - guys like Means/Greinke/Pineda/Marquez/Manaea will likely be available at the deadline, and there's always the chance he could even look at adding Bieber/Castillo/Mahle/Montas/maybe even Gray if they feel like Morton doesn't have one more season left in him at that point.
