Official 2023 Playoff Thread

There just isn’t enough of an advantage to having the bye in baseball, and there’s too much rest built in for the wild card teams. That much is obvious after seeing the same thing play out the last couple years.

So three of the four teams that had a bye in the wild card round lose Game 1 of their LDS. You can make that out for what you’d like, but does raise a bit of an eyebrow

The details may not have been the same last year, but, without looking it up, it seems that the bye was not an advantage last year either.

Just to add to it, the three teams who lost their Game 1 on Saturday all won 100 games in the regular season. Again, you can draw your own conclusions.

With the long lay off coming that’s why I wasn’t pissed at Snit for resting guys and taking them out after 1 inning. I know there is risk of injury but they needed to play. The scrimmage games they had may have helped them a little bit but there’s nothing like playing competitive baseball to keep you fresh.

This is the way.

Ironically this game makes me think if we can just survive Philly...we are just so much better than so many of these teams and in a 7 game series am confident we should rake - and unlike Baltimore we have Fried going tomorrow.

Last year was frustrating because it felt like we lost due to Fried and Strider just getting sick / hurt at wrong time of year. Will see how Fried is tomorrow, but if he is himself and we lose, then we just got beat head to head...

This game has nothing to do with ours, but somehow, this makes me even more nervous about tomorrow

No need to be nervous. Rangers and O's have nothing to do with the Braves.

The narrative can be whatever you want it to be. Braves lost in the NLDS last year due to the the long lay off. But another 100 win team in the Mets (who played well in the 2nd half and was fighting until the end of the season to try and winthe division) lost in the Wild Card series without having a layoff.

In 2021 the Dodgers and Giants both won 100 games and were fighting hard and playing well to end the season. No layoff with either team and the narrative there was that both teams were tired and Braves took advantage of that in the NLCS agaisnt the Dodgers.

So the narrative is basically whatever excuse you want to make for your team losing. In the end the playoffs are a crapshoot and there is no real answer.

That being said, if you are going to give teams a bye they need a real advantage.

Well said.

MLB network segment on our game pointing out that the layoff hurt us because we hadn’t seen any real live hard pitches inside in a long time - that during the scrimmages the pitchers couldn’t pitch in. So Ranger pounded us inside to start the series and our timing was way off.
Today we should be back to normal and whip dey fannies ….

I'm more concerned this is Fried's first start in a while. Sorta feels like going to strider last year in game 3

The only positive is that Strider was coming back from a legit injury that impacts delivery, feel, and velocity. A blister, if contained, is much better. He also at least got some work in on Tuesday. Strider had essentially nothing. Overall, I'm with you. But still.
