I feel like every year we say “as soon as so and so signs, the dam is gonna break” and every year when that player signs it remains quiet
Everybody is still in shock over the Ohtani contract. Trying to make sense of it before proceeding.

He's in his mid-20s. Is he financially set to defer money?

A 25 year old star in Japan is still making a ton more money than regular people
And then trades for Glasnow/Arozarena and Cease.
Just like a classic anime. Ohtani has started his villan arc.
Ken Rosenthal just wrote this: "When all was said and done, the three trades the Braves made related to their acquisition of outfielder Jarred Kelenic from the Mariners cost them something in the range of $15 million, according to a major-league source briefed on the finances."

I'm guessing that the Braves counter-position is that Kelenic is still pre-arb and that control until after the 2028 season will more than recoup the estimated $15 million initial cost related to the acquisition. Add to that there would have been a cost in players (though certainly not steep) for someone like Verdugo and he's a free agent after the 2024 season so that would possibly amount to a rental.
Still and all, it's a bet on a toolsy guy. The spectrum for "Jackpot to Meh to Bust" is in play.
Total or this year, Kenny?
I still love the overall idea of getting Jelenic even if I have nuts to pick with the subsequent moves.
