This seems logical to me, tbh.

I'm guessing that the Braves counter-position is that Kelenic is still pre-arb and that control until after the 2028 season will more than recoup the estimated $15 million initial cost related to the acquisition. Add to that there would have been a cost in players (though certainly not steep) for someone like Verdugo and he's a free agent after the 2024 season so that would possibly amount to a rental.

Still and all, it's a bet on a toolsy guy. The spectrum for "Jackpot to Meh to Bust" is in play.

Total or this year, Kenny?

I still love the overall idea of getting Jelenic even if I have nuts to pick with the subsequent moves.

It's gamble. For 2024 they overpaid for the production they are likely to get for Kelenic based on what on what was available. But everyone else was a rental and I think it's a reasonable overpay to hopefully have LF filled for the next 5 years.

They obviously saw something in Kelenic they knew they could change to turn him around. I have faith that guys on the team, hitting coach, and Chipper can unlock his potential.

The talent is there. He had an average exit velocity over 91 mph last year, which is a lot better than average. He also hit a ball 114 mph last year, which only 6% of players in MLB achieved - so the power is there. If the Braves feel they can improve his patience and outside chase rate, they may have something approximating an average MLB LF on their hands. And if things go really well, he has considerable upside beyond that. I think that’s the bet AA made and it’s a good one in my view with a reasonable expectation of an average-ish floor.

Kelenic should benefit moving to a more hitter friendly park and playing in an offense that put's a lot of people on base in front of him. I would be surprised if his WAR was lower than Rosario's 2023 assuming the same amount of playing time.

They are sending ~9 million with Gonzalezz and 6.25 million with Stassi. I've read that the 4.5 million coming from the Mariners next year was designated for White so not sure if that was be redirected to the Angels or not. If not that cuts down on the cost a bit as well.

Kelenic is essentially Riley if Riley was a LHH with a grade less power and never fixed his contact issues. So the hope is obviously whatever fix they implemented for Riley will work on Kelenic. If we talk about grading "make up" Riley gets an 80 grade and Kelenic gets...a much lower grade.

Riley has settled in as a .275/.345/.520 type hitter, and I'd imagine the high end for Kelenic being more walks and less power, or roughly .275/.360/.490 with average or better cOF defense.

I expect to see all sorts of articles talking about how guys like Harris, Olson, Riley and Chipper have given him the magic. Hopefully he listens and doesn't punch a wall.

There are also the prospects the Braves sent in the deal. Will have to see if any of those even pan out but they did have value.

I'm no accountant, but I wonder what the real value of that Ohtani contract is without interest and factoring in an inflation rate? One would assume getting the deferred money now means investing it at 6-10% for the next 20 years, at a minimum.

It seemed like alot of work, but I like getting Kelenic. I hope it pans out. One thing to note is that he absolutely raked in AAA whenever he was sent down:
126G, 95/28/98/16, .302/.374/.567/.941

The talent is there.
