Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Would we consider having both Guillorme and Fletcher on the roster? Seems odd. Probably would have worked in the days of no DH, but not so much now. How many teams need a shortstop? Maybe we will just wait on the dust to settle and then trade Fletcher to one of them?

Well, right now bench looks like TDA, one of Guillorme/Fletch, Wall, and RH OF'er TBNL.

It seems like everything that happened this offseason other than the Lopez deal was brought about by the desire to get Kelenic in LF. Hopefully he hits and it all ends up being worth it.

I guess AA's reasoning is fletcher is the insurance policy for Arcia, and geormeeeemmkrur (sp?) is our IF backup

What was the point of Fletcher if we were going to sign a Guillorme? He’s going to be the most expensive AAA infielder in the US.

It's kind of a sideways step.

I'm expecting the PTBNLs to be guys in the lower reaches of the Pirates' and White Sox' systems. Maybe someone in the 20-30 range on those teams' prospects list. I doubt it will be someone close to the big leagues.

Wasn’t the Pirates PTBNL someone we wanted them to take in the Rule 5 draft and deal to us, but then he didn’t make it to their pick? I thought that converted to cash already.

Could be. I missed that. If so, I remember there was some noise about Nasim Nunez, but the Nationals drafted him.

Certainly, they’ve evinced a strong conviction in Kelenic’s being worth it. I hope they’re right—but it seems like the AA FO has a good track-record with strong convictions.

Good teams aquire players for what they will do and bad teams aquire players for what they have done. Kelenic will be playing this year at age 24 which is when many players are just getting started on the majors. He wasn't a terrible player last year and if he simply repeats that for the rest of his time before FA we still wouldn't have overpaid for him. To get similar production from a Rosario type we would be paying 8-10 million a year.

Worst case scenario we made a 25 million dollar mistake. That's a lot better than making 150 million dollar mistake on a FA who turns into Melvin.

Especially when it comes to position players.
