Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

I don't think Freeman and Swanson are the saviors we're missing, but I've got very little issue with Schultz's column. You're arguably the best player on the planet, you should be held to a higher standard. This is understood in every sport except apparently baseball. I don't give a damn how upset and pissed you are, running to the bus is weakness. I still love him, hope he runs away with the MVP vote and hope he's leading the charge next year and many years to come. He's not beyond criticism.

I’ve been waiting 5 months for his Ozuna mea culpa that never came.

And now he’s moved on to blaming Acuna for not having Dansby and Freddie’s leadership abilities (while conveniently not mentioning how the Cubs and Dodgers both somehow managed to choke in a worse way than the Braves).

FF is fair. Cubs were 9 games better this year, and I think a lot of that was Swanson (4.9 fWAR) and bellinger (4.1 fWAR)

Agreed. It’s a tough look for Acuna. He could have said I’m sorry yesterday and people would have moved on eventually. Unfortunately this will linger around him until he comes through.

What did Snitker do well this series?

How were role players expected to perform when they got minimal reps during the regular season?

Murphy played 2 games in a 15 day span. There is a reason guys need a rehab stint coming back from injury.

Snitker back tracked on his strategy to use an optimized lineup in game 1 because he “didn’t like how it looked”. That allowed the Phillies to use lefties all game to neutralize Olson (yes Olson deserves the most blame for not delivering).

His players were acting like buffoons in the dugout (and clubhouse). That video of Arcia acting like a clown is going to linger around this team for a long time.

There’s not a single thing I can point to and say he did well. Call it sour grapes but we we are only going to have a few shots with this core and we’ve wasted the last two.

Who cares what Arcia was doing in the dugout? He was acting silly, yes, but at least he was clearly loose unlike the rest of the team. Saying that the video will “linger” over the organization like some black cloud is ridiculous hyperbole.

I don’t think anyone should be particularly surprised by the fact Acuna isn’t some stoic leader ready to lead a group of men to greatness. He was wearing a 40/70 T-shirt for crying out loud, and has no idea what situations call for aggression or caution. He just goes out and plays as he feels in the situation.

And that’s ok. Not every talented player can be a leader, so stop blaming him for not being one. For now he needs to go out there and punish baseballs. Guys like Harris and Ozzie are going to have to lead.

It bothered Acuna.

This is a good team. We had a good season. Sometimes it doesn't workout, especially now that the playoffs are open to a million teams. It's a shame we didn't go farther, but excited for next year. Probably need to get some pitching.

I get it, this is part of y'all's process, gotta get out the pent-up frustration. But I'm happy overall with this season.

AA talked up Grissom today. Marketing him for a trade or considering him as a LF option? Or is Snit going to have to take a seminar in super-sub usage?

Grissom isn’t a super sub because he can’t play positions that require arm strength, and he doesn’t hit enough to play LF. He is a low power 2B blocked by Albies and AA needs to convert that value into pitching this offseason.

Lopez is the guy everyone seems to mistakenly think Grissom is.

Well said. He has his quirks, but he's extremely gifted and is the Braves' best player by a good margin. Not everyone has to be a leader. Just let him play and hope he doesn't become a total lunatic.

I really hate to toot my own horn on this day (or ever), but I called this as early as May. I believe I said it after the Toronto series that I expect another first-round exit. It was obvious that the team is extremely talented. But also poor fundamentally, mentally soft, with an overall low baseball IQ and a bit naive. They were clearly not built for tough environments and big stages. They did give me hope for a minute with the Dodgers series. But alas, even that one has lost some glitter in hindsight.

But for me, that was ok. I said at the time I was going to enjoy the heck out of the regular season, and I did. But I also had this moment in the back of my mind, and now it‘s here.

I see these priorities, for this offseason and beyond, if the Braves want to break this wheel:

1. Stress plate discipline and a methodical hitting approach as something absolutely essential. The Braves made some improvements in this area, but it still seems to come and go. Teams that do well in this area seem to be more successful in the postseason, and it was the difference between these two teams in several key spots this series. You just can‘t have a strikezone that‘s 10-20% bigger than the rulebook states. That is a major edge for the opposing pitcher.

2.Figure out what the hell is going on beyond the obvious that keeps causing this type of underperformance in the postseason. Hire some genius to crunch every number on statcast for the next year. Find out what happened to the hard-hit balls. Hire people away from the Phillies or Astros or Dodgers to find out how they prepare for such a series, both mentally and strategically. Get a sports psychologist to thoroughly grill these players, to find out why they can‘t show up in peak mental state when it matters the most.

3. Hire a manager from outside the organization that brings a more modern type of baseball and leadership. Thanks for ˋ21 Snit, but your time has clearly passed.
Find coaches that can teach plate discipline and game fundamentals.

4. As for the roster, I don‘t think major upgrades are necessary or possible. SP can certainly be improved, but that alone is not going to move the needle a year from now if the above issues aren’t addressed, IMO. I‘d let Morton go, and give the #5 spot to the youngsters. See what you can get with the money and trade pieces available. Get some bench players that can actually start some games.

Most of all: Make winning the club‘s identity, not just something that is nice to have.

It bothered Acuna.

It must’ve not bothered Acuña that badly, because he let him continue doing it and laughed a little about it before kindly telling him to stop.

Either way, no one is going to remember this in two weeks, much less “a long time”.

Honestly, i'm okay with playing around in the dugout.....i'm not okay with doing it in that situation. Facing elimination and behind on the score board. Definitely a bad look.
