Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

AA talked up Grissom today. Marketing him for a trade or considering him as a LF option? Or is Snit going to have to take a seminar in super-sub usage?

I thought they would play him around the field a little more than they did this year. I'm not in charge (which is a relief to Braves' fans everywhere), but I would have given him time at 3B, 1B, and LF in addition to his time at SS and 2B. Like Enscheff says, he's probably not a super-sub, but I think they should try to find that out while he's in the minors rather than trying to have him learn multiple positions at the major league level.

It's a little bit funny (at least to me). Grissom and the Tigers' Riley Greene were high school teammates. Greene is high ceiling with a lot of risk attached. Grissom has a reasonable floor that he likely will reach. In a lot of ways, Grissom reminds of players from an earlier era with reallly solid skills but not top drawer physicality. Game has changed so much and this type of player has largely gone the way of the dinosaur, especially in an era with short position-player benches.

I don't think Freeman and Swanson are the saviors we're missing, but I've got very little issue with Schultz's column. You're arguably the best player on the planet, you should be held to a higher standard. This is understood in every sport except apparently baseball. I don't give a damn how upset and pissed you are, running to the bus is weakness. I still love him, hope he runs away with the MVP vote and hope he's leading the charge next year and many years to come. He's not beyond criticism.

He hit multiple balls 100+ mph in Game 4, including his last one that was about 5 feet from a grand slam. Both were outs. Them's the breaks.

As far as not talking to press, I don't blame him after the Arcia fiasco. I'd tell them to kick rocks too.

Honestly, i'm okay with playing around in the dugout.....i'm not okay with doing it in that situation. Facing elimination and behind on the score board. Definitely a bad look.

I disagree. The team is used to playing care free and fun. Changing the attitude changes the dynamic of the team. I would rather see them cutting up and waving their arms like Angels, even facing elimination.

With a good offseason, we should be primed to once again win around 100. Crazy - we won 104 with 14 starts from Fried. Our rotation most of year was basically Strider, Morton, Elder and a revolving door of minor leaguers.

Be interesting to see how Grissom is handled. We all know that unfortunately Snitker might be the worst manager in baseball when it comes to utilizing a bench, getting guys rest and being creative. All the guy knows how to do is write in his favorite 8 and then bench his starting catcher. If he shows signs of improvement on defense, in theory would say get him a start 2x a week at short, 2x a week in left field, and occasional DH / spot start across the diamond

I'm still not writing off Soroka. No better example than Acuna - a generational talent and off a serious injury was a shell of himself. Soroka missed like 3-years and largely was healthy last year. Wouldn't bet on him, but also think he is absolutely a viable option as a 5th starter

--8 of 9 offensive positions are set.

--Rotation is the biggest variable, but arguably only upside relative to the regular season given we get a healthy Fried and frankly struggle to see how it can be worse than the revolving door we had.

--Pen is in good shape, basically bringing most of everyone back, and ideally can add 1-2 parts this offseason. Matzek obviously who knows but could also be back and Dylan Lee.

--I think the bench desperately needs an upgrade. We were pretty fortunate this year that basically our entire offense stayed healthy. Pillar is simply not fit to be a teams best righty option off the bench and we paid the price for that in these playoffs

Acuna went from MVP candidate to above average after the injury. Not really comparable to Soroka. Mike Hampton..... I mean Soroka needs to go to the ex-brave exile in KC where he can get reps in the majors. If the Braves keep him they need to try working him back as a reliever. If he can get be effective over a full season in that role and stay relatively healthy then we can consider moving him back to the rotation.

3 bold predictions for this offseason and 2024...
1. Braves sign snell
2. Matzek is back to old self
3. Harris gets a postseason hit

Other than ohtani there isn’t a single FA the Braves can’t be serious contenders to sign. If he’s out there, he’s a legit possibility.

I just hope it isn’t Bellinger. I think he’ll be the biggest mistake signing of this cycle.

What about snell?

It will be someone who we on the board are not expecting. The big names will price themselves out of our market, and AA will find the best value in places we are not expecting.

I don’t see any reason AA can’t afford anyone other than Ohtani. He likely won’t give one of those guys 5 years, but he can certainly grab one for 3 or give one of them a huge 1 year deal.

Yes, he can… but I believe if their asking price is high enough that they are not going to provide good value, he will look elsewhere, or wait for the price to come down.

Any trade candidates that spot us better ?

This is just me dreaming - but Logan Webb was pretty critical of the Giants at the end of the season and questioning the direction of the organization. We already know from deadline reporting that the Giants like Vaughn Grissom a lot. He would definitely cost more than Grissom, but I would love to make something work there.

Yeah, you're dreaming

I don't want to trade AJSS so what would people think about offering Grissom/Elder as a combo to upgrade the rotation? I think we would probably still need to add one of the fairly recently drafted high round high school pitchers to get a deal done but I think that's a good and fair offer to work with.
