Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

You're too quick on the draw bluey!

Although if boob is reporting it, we can probably assume it won't happen

Bob's actually been right alot so far early this offseason. But if it gets leaked out, probably means it aint happening. But curious what a Cease package even looks like, probably AJS/Griss at least to start.

Gray getting only 3/75 should weigh down Stroman and E-Rod deals a bit. I find it unlikely either one tops 75 million total. I am going to guess Stroman probably gets around 3/50. E-Rod around 4/65 or may be 3/60 with a 4th year option.

I would be happy with either of those deals, tbh.

I mean Santander is a 2-2.5 fWAR player and Verdugo is a 1.5-2 fWAR player... Verdugo is also a MUCH better defender. Calling Santander a significantly better player is a bit overboard.

I guess I misremembered their stats. I thought Santander was more of a 3.5-4 WAR guy while Verdugo was around 2.0

Yes, but one of my favorite off season practices is making fun of him

I don't see how we have the horses to win a Cease bidding war, tbh.

Maybe if we took on that Benintendi contract, but I probably wouldn't want him at that point.

They don’t have QOs though. I could see Rodriguez getting more than $75m.

They also don't have as strong of track record as Gray does. Gray is coming off a 5 WAR season and has a 3.22 ERA over his last 670 innings, spanning 5 years. E-Rod had a good year, but he's only been league average the prior 2 years and missed a good chunk of time to injury. Stroman has been pretty good, but he's also missed a good chunk of time to injury. And Cubs apparently had no intention of trying to extend Stroman either and were happy to let him opt out of his final year and 21 million.

I get that they are younger pitchers without a QO, but I just don't see either pitcher getting over 20 million or more than 4 guaranteed years.

Depends on what the White Sox think their main needs are. They need MI help so Grissom can help them out at 2b. Only way I’m trading AJSS is if we can try to extend Cease.

He’s a Boras client, so I’m skeptical about that happening.

While I’m glad the Braves didn’t sign Gray, a contract for 3/75 is very reasonable and something I would have understood AA handing out. The Gray contract coupled with Maeda signing for 2/24 is a sign that these #3 SPs may not command the contracts we thought they would. At this point waiting out a high value deal is even more clearly the smart play, unless they are only shopping in the Nola/Yama/Cease aisle.

We have the horses. 2 of AJSS/Grissom/Waldrep would get us 90% of the way there with a lower tier prospect or two that they like in our system to get it done. We just shouldn't be offering either of our 2 best lottery tickets that could turn into the most valuable commodity in baseball..... Cheap SP.

That Yelich contract is pretty ugly. Would really need them to eat some of that salary to make it palatable. I get that we don't have a ton of prospect capital so taking on the contract lessens what we give up, but that contract is a good way to shorten our competitive window fast.

I would rather throw 200 million at Yamamato than to take on Yelich for around half the cost. Especially since Burnes is a 1 year rental.

Everything before Yamamoto you mentioned I covered in my post. In detail......

Yeah, Braves have the assets for Cease. I just have big doubts he'd actually offer it up.

I highly doubt any combination (even all 3) would be close to obtaining Cease. And I don't see what value Grissom holds to a team like the Chi-Sox who are in clear rebuild mode. Grissom holds more value to a team like the Rays in a Glasnow trade since they need cheap MLB ready talent to remain competitive.

All 3 of those wouldn’t get you close? Put the pipe down bc it definitely would.

This isn’t the NBA. Players don’t really have a say in where they go unless they have a NTC.

I didn’t say it was. I said in my previous post that if we were gonna trade AJSS I’d prefer trying to get an extension worked out and that him being from Georgia would be the biggest hope we had with him being a Boras client.
