Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Listening to AA's radio interviews yesterday and just reading in between the lines, not going out on any big limb here, but I think his next focus will be on finding that right-handed outfielder and then a couple of guys to compete with Wall for that last bench spot.

So AA says not to believe the rumors of an offer for Nola. Says that Nola's first choice was always to re-sign with the Phillies, but there was an understanding that both sides had interest if he couldn't work something out with Philly.

I think it's pretty unlikely we would have approached anything close to what Philly did. Maybe some team option years that would have equaled that much if we picked up them up, but certainly not anywhere close in guaranteed money.

I've actually heard AA say (and read in the Athletic), "We pursued Nola". I suppose that could just mean a touching base phone call in case Philly didn't work out, but that was not what Alex inferred.

Perhaps that rejection spurred AA's bizarre streak of acquisitions of bad money contracts.

White, Gonzales, Stassi, Carpenter. Fletcher, Kelenic and Sale. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

It was a strange way to spend $30M. But, now he's done it, it's off the books next year, maybe next year he spends $30M in a more conventional manner. Like a tall, lean Jewish lefthander who touches 98, has command, has a Rolls Royce of a curveball and five pitches.

Between Lopez, Winans, AJSS, Vines, Waldrep, eventually Ian Anderson as well, we have more than enough SP depth to cover through the regular season.

I also like our depth going into the season. Dont forget Huascar Ynoa too. And I dont think people should be writing off Ian Anderson. His prospect shine has worn off but I still think theres a reasonably good(pitchers are always risky) chance he is a good SP for the next few years. Plenty of SP had a bumpy road before becoming good reliable pitchers. I think Vines could have a Elder-esque type breakout as in go from being seen as a depth pitcher to a legitimate back of the rotation SP option.

What I posted is from his interview yesterday with a local radio show. Doesn't sound like we ever made a real offer. He specifically said Nola's first choice was always to go back to Philly but there was interest there if it didn't work out. Here is the excerpt:

"There were a lot of rumors and the only one I’ve acknowledged is the Aaron Nola one, but to clarify that, we absolutely checked in on Aaron Nola,” Anthopoulos said. “But there was a lot of transparency on that side that his first choice, his priority if the deal made sense, was to go back to Philadelphia. And if that didn’t present itself for whatever reason and they wouldn’t come to terms financially, then we were a very desirable place for him.

“But they were transparent from the getgo on that, that the first choice was to go back to the Phillies. He was there a long time, they’re a great organization and he’s had a lot of success there. Totally fine, made sense for us, so we understood that, that played out and they ultimately signed him and that was the end of it."

Imanga expected to land a deal north of 100M, per Passan. His window closes in 9 days. Havent even heard who is interested in him.

Bring back Duvall. Gives us insurance in case Kelenic sucks, Ozuna regresses or a major injury.

Duvall makes so much sense, but I wonder if he waits it out to see if he can get a good deal somewhere where he'd be guaranteed more playing time. We don't exactly use our bench players very much. So if the most he'd be guaranteed here is potentially on the lesser side of a LF platoon, I think he'd be smart to wait it out and see what he can get elsewhere.

Yeah, i was gonna say i dont know if Duvall would want to just be a platoon/bat off the bench.

Could be. But he only got 300 ABs in Boston last year, and he is 35, maybe he'd be down. I thought Pillar was a pretty good fit for that role. Grichuk might be, too. Michael Taylor (the other one). Couple other guys.

He's been a part time player for over half if his career. Granted, he probably would get less than 200 at bats for us next year.

Rosenthal said on his podcast today that Fried is definitely gone in the free agency. Obviously, that's speculation, but I suspect he's right.

Well yeah. He would have been extended by now if it was happening. This close to FA it's a no brainer he's hitting the market.
