Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Yes.

We need pitching, not hitting. And especially not a DH. Signing Shohei to a 35 million per year deal through age 40 doesn't sound like a AA move.

This may seem like a sarcastic question but it really isn't so don't get all uppity.

Do we not need pitching in 2025 after\if Max departs?

My guess/preference/hope (that will almost certainly not be what AA does since he never does what we expect) is the offseason decision making process plays out like this:

Plan A - Yamamoto for $200M, Grissom in LF.
Plan B if they can't sign Yama - Stroman (or equivalent) for 2/3 years, trade Grissom for a LF.
Plan C if they can't trade for a LF - Stroman (or equivalent) for 2/3 years, timeshare in LF with a LHH FA like Heyward and Grissom.

I really like the idea of going after Yamamoto because he is so young he has a real shot at filling the top of the rotation for several years. Additionally, he only costs money, a large chunk of which ($30M-$40M) will be due to his former team up front, and the Braves should have plenty of cash to spend at the moment.

Of course his likely move is something like trading for Adames then extending him, just like he got Murphy last year despite C not being a "position of need" for the club.

Again, not saying that it is likely or changes anything, but I think I read somewhere that Ohtani may consider playing OF this season.

Since we know AA and his front office never leak anything, the news of the interest in Nola and Gray seems like something those players agents put out there to help inflate their markets.

So let's think that through...

A SP who didn't play OF with a healthy elbow will now play OF while recovering from TJ surgery? Does that seem at all likely to you?

I could see him going the Harper route and playing some 1st or something to build up arm strength. But from what I’ve read it wasn’t TJ but a more minor procedure

Yama makes the most sense longterm. But i dont know if AA would give him the years. ERod is kinda interesting to me, no QO, LH, eventually could replace Fried. There's alot of options out there, this offseason and next if you do need SP.

I think Montgomery and Rodriguez make the first cut and being LH plays into that. I can't believe either one of those guys will get more than 3 years plus a club option, but teams have gone crazy when it comes to pitching contracts.

I'm not the one that recommended it.....and I don't see us even talking to his agent....But it would be pretty sick to have him on the team.

Acuna
Ohtani
Riley
Olson
Murphy
Albies
Ozuna LF
Arcia
Harris

I'm not opposed to bringing in someone like a Heyward to put Grissom under their wing to work on LF, but it seems incredibly dumb to have wasted a whole season without getting him reps out there in Triple-A, even if just 2-3 times a week. As soon as they extended Arcia, they had to understand that Grissom was blocked on the infield, right? And as far as we know, there are no plans to trade Ozzie out one of the most relatively team-friendly deals in the history of the sport. Something isn't adding up.

I think it’s posturing by AA. He’s talked to some team about Grissom in a trade and he’s trying to make him look more versatile and appealing. This doesn’t make him look as desperate to a possible FA. Or I could be completely wrong and he’s really gonna try this out and go big for a SP. Like Cheff said I hope it’s Yamamoto

Maybe AA signs Yamamoto and trades for Kim to take over at short. As Enscheff mentioned, Adames is also a possibility given AA's patterns.

Remember when Grissom and Shew were legit options at SS, and then were sent to AAA early in ST? Remember how those internal options meant the Braves didn't need to spend big on a FA SS, and therefor weren't desperate? This is the same thing.

The only way Grissom is an acceptable answer in LF is is every available penny spent to acquire Yamamoto or a SP of similar quality. If he's in LF for any other reason AA messed up.

I said it yesterday. If AA puts Grissom in LF and doesn’t get the best SP available it’s a fail. I keep harping on Yamamoto but the dude is 25 and has ace stuff. If there was ever a time to throw your hat in the ring to get somebody it’s this guy.

Stop it with that mess

Don’t know how serious this is, but I have said before, I expect AA to take a number of flyers on guys like this in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle.

I see this as in addition to the serious moves he will be making, and not limiting any other moves at all.
