Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Braves are on the verge of acquiring Patrick Corbin, per Bill Schmidt who has broken a bunch of trades over the last couple years.

Wow.

I know this is fake because no one is ever going to be “on the verge” of acquiring Patrick Corbin. He’s like the stomach flu. It just happens and you deal with the consequences. No one tries to get the stomach flu

Morosi also just said we're interested in Nola and Gray. Nothing crazy but still.

Remember when Grissom and Shew were legit options at SS, and then were sent to AAA early in ST? Remember how those internal options meant the Braves didn't need to spend big on a FA SS, and therefor weren't desperate? This is the same thing.

The only way Grissom is an acceptable answer in LF is is every available penny spent to acquire Yamamoto or a SP of similar quality. If he's in LF for any other reason AA messed up.

Exactly. Grissom was never going to be the SS or a serious option. The glowing reports of his improving defense. I don’t think anyone bought it but they tried

The thing is people were jumping all over Jeff Schultz for his idiotic post about Michael Harris II from last week (and it was idiotic), but he's the only writer on the Braves' beat that doesn't buy the front office's line on just about everything. Reading Bowman and O'Brien, you'd swear if it weren't for bad luck, the Braves would have been 162-0. Those two probably make their wives/girlfriends wear Alex Anthopoulos masks to bed. If Ignacio Alvarez isn't the Minor League Player of the Year for all of baseball, I am going to demand a recount!

I think Montgomery and Rodriguez make the first cut and being LH plays into that. I can't believe either one of those guys will get more than 3 years plus a club option, but teams have gone crazy when it comes to pitching contracts.

I think you can slot Shota Imanaga into that bin, as well: 30, FG projects him for 4/$88m, Zips projects him for 3.1 fwar in 2024, no QO (obviously), LHP. He has FB and HR concerns, but strikes out a lot of guys and runs really low BB%. During the season, he’s likely your #3 or #4; in the playoffs, he can fill that role Suarez filled for the Phillies.

I'm not opposed to bringing in someone like a Heyward to put Grissom under their wing to work on LF, but it seems incredibly dumb to have wasted a whole season without getting him reps out there in Triple-A, even if just 2-3 times a week. As soon as they extended Arcia, they had to understand that Grissom was blocked on the infield, right? And as far as we know, there are no plans to trade Ozzie out one of the most relatively team-friendly deals in the history of the sport. Something isn't adding up.
I think it’s posturing by AA. He’s talked to some team about Grissom in a trade and he’s trying to make him look more versatile and appealing. This doesn’t make him look as desperate to a possible FA. Or I could be completely wrong and he’s really gonna try this out and go big for a SP. Like Cheff said I hope it’s Yamamoto

They likely also kept him in the infield during 2023 to help his trade value at the deadline, should they have needed to trade him.

I want Yamamoto so bad but I just can’t see AA doing it. Give me Yamamoto and Lugo… then trade for a LFer… use Grissom and Elder and get a difference maker

I keep hearing that but what is it exactly that makes anyone think AA wouldn't do it?

He’ll probably require between 7 and 10 years (depending on how crazy his market gets) at a $25m AAV; then there’s a posting fee that’ll add about 17% to the total outlay (but in a lump sum this off-season which won’t count towards the CBT payroll figure).

If the Braves can swing him at the lower end (maybe 7/$180m), there’s a likelier shot; the 9/$225 that MLBTR predicts (on the high end) is likely out of bounds. But who knows: maybe the loose-purse teams will blow their loads on Ohtani and Snell and Nola and leave Yamamoto available for the lower end that Fangraghs pegged (7/$175m).

Those are the 2 I want. I’d be good with that whole plan. Luis Robert would be anazing if Grissom and Elder would interest them.

Ohtani reportedly intrigued by playing for Atlanta. Based on past decisions to come to MLB early I can buy money not being his sole motivator. Only way I could see it happening is if he would take a short term deal like 2-3 years hoping to hit FA again after proving he can still pitch after TJ. Honestly anyone that gives him 50 million a year is an idiot. I am highly skeptical he can be a high end SP again. Maybe he can DH and be a closer.
