Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

I’m still at a loss for why we would give Jordan Montgomery 6/150 or Aaron Nola 7/200 or whatever he’s supposedly wanting instead of locking up Fried for something in between those amounts.

Think I’ve decided I would like us to back up the truck to sign Shohei, go back to the White Sox for Cease, get a fourth outfielder with a glove and decent arm who could spell Ozuna in the late innings (assuming we don’t trade him in a deal and eat a little of the salary), trade for Kim, make Arcia the roving utility man, get a couple more low profile bullpen options, and see if one of the back end rotation free agents falls in your lap as insurance for Elder (if he isn’t in the Cease or Kim deal) or whoever else.

I really can’t think of any reason to dump a bunch of AAAA players to make room for a bunch of different AAAA players

There was no one who was let go except Tonkin that contributed in 2023, but I agree this is way out of the norm. I didn't see anyone on the official non-tender list that was particularly interesting in terms of possible replacements, but I'm guessing the front office saw some guys who were available that hit some performance measurements that intrigues them. But I totally agree with you here.

The Yamamoto sweepstakes start Tuesday I believe so it’ll be interesting to see who wins the bidding. So did Ozuna have a fluke year or does he come close to repeating this year again? Hopefully he has a contract year coming up but I could see AA trying to trade his way out of that situation if possible. Problem is there aren’t many options out there to fill that spot.

That dude from the angels

Going to likely need two starters either way. And you just don’t know what’s going to happen with Fried; he’s going to FA no matter what (I mean unless AA made him a monster offer, which he shouldn’t do). You can’t pass on signing someone for this season (and beyond) and hope that Fried’s market stays in your range.

That said I strongly prefer giving Yama whatever he’s going to get. It won’t be significantly more and he seems well worth it. I’m really really hoping he’s the move.

The Battery is already a cash cow, I couldn’t imagine dipping into the Asian market and how much more it would bring in. People were bringing suitcases to Angels games just to buy up Ohtani gear.

Because it's looking like it's going to take a contract around 6-7 years at 200 mill plus and we would probably need to significantly beat a similar offer by a West coast team. Yamamoto profiles as more of a 2/3 SP than a Fried level ace. He is also significantly shorter than Darvish/Ohtani. I just don't think it's reasonable to expect AA to pay 30-35 million a year for 6+ years for someone who hasn't ever pitches in the majors. We have never been a team to sign high end FA pitching to long term contracts . Beyond that he might even want opt outs which should be a deal breaker but that's just me.

How many times has AA had an opportunity to sign a 25 year old pitcher to a long term contract as a FA? This is not the same situation as a regular FA

I’m split right now with what I think is going to happen. On one hand, we are down to 30 on the 40 man roster and have money to spend. On the other hand, that is a lot of spots to fill that will take that money up. Also, AA is not known to go out and spend big on FA, especially on the starting rotation.

I would love to get Ohtani, however, if we could add Yamamoto and Gray to the rotation, plus say Soler in LF for the same price as Ohtani, I take option B.

I feel like a trade for Glasgow or Barnes at this point is a lot less likely now that our fringe guys are gone.

Previously he has said he intends to go to FA.

That said- he has walked that back a bit in the last 18 mo but not all the way back

I been thinking trade Ozuna and trade for Juan Soto. Juan Soto for LF and DA/Murphy for Dh/C. In a few years move Juan Soto to Dh.

I think Cobin Burnes is the pitcher AA is looking. Yamamoto don’t have mlb experience. Glasnow always get hurt. Burnes is a Top of the Rotation pitcher. Atlanta need someone now not in 2-3 years. Burnes is that guy. He just turn 29. A 5 year contract is not that crazy. I think we finish we Adames and Burnes.

Unloading all these spots would indicate we may take on some salary dumps, which makes me think he’s dealing with Milwaukee or SD.

I’d love to get Burnes but do you see us dealing with his agent?
We’ve never dealt with Borras under AA.
Last time we had a player of his I can remember was one of the Upton’s I think.

How much salary did we actually dump? Lopez was the big one, but other than that I don't see much in terms of immediate bottom line. They avoided some hits and that would go into 2024 savings, so there is, as you say, more elbow room. Milwaukee and San Diego make sense as trade partners, especially for either Adames or Kim, but I doubt those teams are going to give those guys away and I wonder what we have to trade to for them. Depending what the Braves do in free agency, I can see them trying to sell high on Elder.

You are right but if AA is looking for a impact player that’s Corbin Burnes. Snell is another but he turn 31 this year. Our window is now! The other possibility is extended Max Fried and add someone cheaper Rodriguez or Gray to a 3-4 years.

Yamamoto but he never pitch at MLB. Is he better than Senga?

AA signed dallas keuchel… he was a Boras client. But it was also a bit different situation.

Teixeira was a Boras client, but he did change agents at one point in his career. I don't know if he worked with Boras during his tenure with the Braves.

What's Ozzie's trade value these days?

Maybe you get multiple pieces for him.

He’s a great player who makes $7m for the next 4 years and not insignificantly is the best friend to our generational player.

He probably has more value to the Braves than he does to other teams
