Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Yeah thats complete bs and should be shot down by the commissioners office. That has to be changed bc that is going above and beyond to stay below the tax. Ridiculous.

Yanks about to offer Soto a 500 million extent right now with deferred money.

that’s wild. I mean Shohei unlike other rookies signed a big contract when he came here. So he’s basically already set for life plus he makes so much off the field from endorsemens, and being the most popular athlete in Japan. That 700 million isn’t his main source of earnings.

kei Nishikori similarly in tennis, was reported to be earning almost a quarter of a billion USD annually because at the time he was Japan’s most high profile professional athlete in an individual sport. He only made one grand slam final, and has more or less been injured most of his career.

Dodgers not paying interest for the next 10 years on the 680M they are borrowing. With inflation and interest rates, they may actually make money on the contract

Selfless move from Ohtani. I hope he's aware of what he's giving up with this structure. I assume he is but you never know

Also, all 29 other teams should throw at a random Dodgers player (not Ohtani) first game of the series they face them.

Sounds to me like he is fine with it considering all the other obscene amount of money he will make that isn't tied to the contract.

They’re not paying explicit interest but they effectively are. That’s more total dollars than he gets without doing this. If they valued him at 10/$600 for example they’re paying him $100m to do it this way

It's also likely the Dodgers never would have sniffed the $700 million number without this... the CBT value is more in line with what people are expecting.

But still... only taking $2M per year for the next 10 years is going to cost him a fortune just from inflation alone

The most likely outcome for Kelenic is he turns into something approximating Rosario/Verdugo/Kepler/Heyward. Obviously we all hope he turns into a 3-4 win guy who AA then extends for 6 years at a 20% discount, but that’s not the most likely outcome.

Something like those guys but under control for a long time and still 2 years away from age 27 rather than declining.
