Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

I’m surprised the players union is ok with him deferring so much money interest free. All the Dodgers have to do is invest 30 million per year for 10 years at an 8% return and they have the money to pay the 700 million out over the next 10 years. Im sure the Dodgers can grow the money tax free but Othani will have a hell of a tax bill. lol.

Othani may have taken the dumbest 700 million dollar deal ever.

Ohtani is basically an owner at this point.

It better not be. This is very clearly trying to sidestep the CBT, and if MLB was going to veto 14/400 they sure as hell better veto whatever this abomination is.

I very rarely agree with people when they cry about things not being "fair", but this is a clear case of it.

100%

Typically income tax is paid in the state where the income is earned. Seems like it would be hard to get around CA taxes

You are correct sir. Ohtani plays a series in Minnesota, the pro-rated contract amount is subject to Minnesota taxes. Same thing if he plays a series in Georgia. Or Illinois. Or Ohio. And on and on. He will play well over half his games in California, so he'll be subject to the rates there on much of his salary. What I don't know is how the deferred money will be treated in terms of taxation. He'll likely be sitting in Japan at that point. I would guess he will be subject to US taxes (and any Japanese taxes levied against income earned in a foreign country) but because it won't be earned in any particular state, I wonder if any state taxes will apply.

At any rate, I doubt very much that Ohtani or any other player considers the variable tax rates imposed by states heavily in their decisions as to where to sign. If that were the case, players would be clamoring to play for both Texas teams and both Florida teams. As for the deferred money, helluva retirement plan (as though Ohtani will need that).

I don’t understand what the Fletcher trade accomplished other than overpaying a mediocre infielder

I look at it as the Braves paying ~$20M for Kelenic plus a low end backup SS. It took a bunch of moves we would have laughed at had someone proposed them, but $20M (Fletcher’s salary, plus the Stassi cash, plus the Gonzo cash) for taking a shot on Kelenic becoming a 3-4 win guys is essentially the play AA made.

If Kelenic flops we won’t like the deal. If Kelenic turns into what everyone is dreaming on we will love it.

There's also a couple of PTBNLs in there for the Braves who ill be interested to find out about

So a player is allowed to make a payroll loan of 680M interest free to his own team?

For real.

The only reason the contract was so big was because of the deferred money. You could look at that like the Dodgers paying interest.

I feel like every year we say “as soon as so and so signs, the dam is gonna break” and every year when that player signs it remains quiet
