Official Around Baseball 2023 Thread

This whole waiver crap is so stupid.. so because a couple of teams decided to be really, really stupid.. less players were available to trade for and when the really really stupid teams realized how stupid they were/are.. they stick them out there for crappy playoff teams to all of a sudden get better without any penalty.. while great teams like the O's, Braves, Rays and Dodger$ get penalized for being a smart org from the beginning of the season.

It looks like the Twins will be the team that potentially get hurts the worst, as the Guardians loaded up. Still a long shot for the Guardians, but those additions do indeed move the needle.

Giolito, Lopez, and Moore all claimed by the Guardians. They are only 5 games behind the Twins, so pretty savvy moves for them that cost nothing and gives them a puncher's chance at making the playoffs. I figured claims worked the same way they do in FF where you go to the end of the line if put in a claim for even 1 player, but apparently that isn't the case. I do wonder where Clevinger ends up. Hopefully not on LA.

Clevinger is likely to make it through waivers due to his buyout for next year.

I see he passed, which is wild to me, as I think it's only a 4 million buyout plus the remainder he is due this season. I think it comes out to a little over 5 million. I would figure that # wouldn't matter to richer playoff teams like the Dodgers who need a quality pitcher. Clevinger's advanced stats aren't great, but in his last 10 starts he has a 2.24 ERA and a 3.69 FIP.

For reference, the Dodgers were willing to take on Lance Lynn and the remainder if his contract and buyout (roughly 8 million or so), and he had a 6.47 ERA at the time of the trade. But they aren't willing to pony up less money now for a markedly better pitcher? Seems really odd.

It would have been just over 5 mil for Clevinger at this stage of the season after including the buyout for next year. Its a high price for just a month or so of work

I get it. And I'm glad the Dodgers decided against doing it. I'm just surprised a team with deep pockets would pass on the opportunity to upgrade their rotation for a relative pittance of 5 million.

I'm sure the Mets and the Padres would have taken him had they been in it. Same with the Yankees and Boston. But most of the high payroll teams are out of it.

Just bring back the secondary trade deadline, so teams can still improve but will have to pony up something. Taking a guy with a month left cost nothing at this point.

No. Just no.

I get that there needs to be limits on how many guys a team can claim first time through and that procedure should probably be run like a draft, but the waiver trade deadline was just a mess. If it's brought back, the think they should move the non-waiver deadline to the All-Star break and the waiver trade deadline to August 1.

Angels weren't able to get under the luxury tax. So they only get a 4th round comp pick for Ohtani. Lmao what a joke of a team.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the GM fired, which is a shame. The issues with the Halos run back far longer than before he arrived. Their organization is just complete trash. Art Moreno is one of the worst owners in sports.

They have been loving in denial that they news to rebuild for something like 10 years. Reminds me of the Astros before their last rebuild. Waited so long they no longer had good assets to trade.
