OFFICIAL FALLING AXE PREDICTION THREAD

OK, Virginia. Justin clanked a few this year. Who would we rather have had in LF, or who would be better going forward?

TIFWIW I am on meds.

Fredi and the hitting coaches need to go.

BJ wasn't terrible hitter in Tampa but since he got here he has been WAY worse.

I would trade him if someone takes him, but he did not have any help from the PAID coaches, only Chipper helped him and when Chipper wasn't ALLOWED (you'd noticed taht when Chipper came back to the booth throughout after helping BJ, he didn't mention anything about it. So in my opinion someone said something to him about usurping our hitting coaches on the air) to help him, he reverted.

Back to seeing upside down letters backwards and actually understand what I am looking at. Damn the meds!!!

Said before i dont think firing Fredi changes much.

Ultimately it falls onto the players.

I have defended Wren but we'll have nearly 25+ mil tied up into BJ/Uggla which could be used for FA's, extending players (Justin/Jason)

Would guess the hitting coaches are out.

Frank gets one more year.

I can see it either way with Fredi, no idea who replaces him.

I'd say Julio, Wood, Simmons, FF, Kimbrel are "safe"

Everyone else is tradeable.

I agree with this.

The thing that is most disheartening is it appears the players--most notably the hitters--have flat-out quit. I don't know if that ultimately falls on the manager or the players, but it is downright embarrassing. I was less optimistic than most coming into the season, but I'm a middle-aged guy of Scandinavian heritage who thinks the films of Ingmar Bergman are actually comedies, so you have to take my innate pessimism with a grain of salt. But this collapse seems a lot different than the one two years ago because the team appears to be extras on "The Walking Dead" (which ironically is set around Atlanta). Really no excuse for a team to be this lifeless. Pitchers take the mound every night thinking they have to be darn near perfect because a two-run deficit seems insurmountable to this team.

So fire Fredi, but if Wren is kept around, he will have to be under the microscope. And I don't know if you can be an effective GM on a short leash. Which makes me think if one goes, they should both go.

I think what would be smartest is trying to package BJ/Kimbrel to Detroit.

They need a CF, and they are desperate for a closer. They will spend to make it happen.

The emergence of Walden and Shae Simmons makes Kimbrel expendable in my opinion

We may have to seriously consider parting with Kimbrel. What good is a phenomenal closer on a non-contending team. He's a luxury right now. I don't by the "closers are overvalued" argument, but we can probably find somebody to replace Kimbrel and strengthen the line-up at the same time.

Kimbrel is not expendable. I hate the myth that people spew about him being expendable because he's a closer. He's not a normal closer, he's the best in the business on a career start that's more Rivera than people would realize. Simmons and Walden in the time they've been on the Braves have also spent a massive amount of time on the DL compared to Kimbrel who (knock on Wood) hasn't spent any time yet. If Kimbrel is another Rivera or Wagner, you can't just give that up. If we're giving them up, I want Kinsler, Castellanos and a ton of cash coming my way. Basically making Kinsler free for us. Kimbrel to me should have one of the higher trade values on the team.

I would rank the Braves players in terms of untradable as something like

1. Freddie
2. Julio
3. Jason (if he extends he leapfrogs Julio)
4. Justin (same as Jason)
5. Kimbrel
6. WOod
7. Minor
8. Gattis
9. Simmons

After those guys I see no one who I'd bat an eye at trading for the right price. I wouldn't actively shop our prospects or Walden or Shae, but they are soft blows for our team. The first 8 players on that list are the key for us to be back in the playoffs next year. Can you imagine how asstacular we'd be without Jason ro Justin? Or if Bethancourt was our C all year?

Also we should really trry to bring Ervin back, his ERA doesn't list it, but this year was even better than last year. If we dont' make him a QO I'll be upset.

What did Brian Jordan say?

Tom Hart made a comment about no sense of urgency. Brian replied along the lines of because there is no clubhouse leadership. Nobody to call a guy out when necessary. We have argued about it a bit over these last few weeks. I might not know what I am talking about, but he certainly does.

Walden is arguably a must-keep, especially if you dangle Kimbrel in any kind of a deal. Walden is a rarity -- a proven closer-in-waiting who is not (yet) costing a fortune. The Hanson-for-Walden deal is Exhibit A for keeping Wren around.

The problem with this season was that we have a bunch of guys who strike out, don't hit for power, and don't get on base. Oh, and most of those guys (except Simmons) also are terrible defenders.

You don't have to be Billy Beane to figure out that that's a losing combination.

Joe Maddon wouldn't have gotten us to the playoffs, most likely, but our manager is definitely costing us games, and IMO more so than the average MLB manager. I'd conservatively put Fredi's VORM at -5 games or so. Plus he is dumb and I just don't like the fella, to be honest. Get rid of him.

Since the young core is still there to contend, I can't imagine McGuirk / JS will look to fully clean house in the front office and coaching staff by bringing a new GM into the organization and letting him pick his staff with a new philosophy. IMO, it's more likely that Wren stays or is replaced internally by someone like John Coppolella.

Some interesting notes about Coppolella and John Hart in this Gammons piece from today.

I never had a huge problem with Ks until this year. **** 'em. Had enough for a decade or so.

there needs to be HR's to go with the K's, and this year there haven't been nearly enough HR's. Everybody's down. Need to figure this out if we're going to keep this group of regulars.

Sounds like Frank may be on thin ice...

Extending CJ was really the worst move Wren has made IMO. It was a move that said "well, at least we have a 3B now." It was like he'd rather just sign him than deal with finding a replacement.
