Official off-season trade rumor and suggestion thread

I venture to bet we'll have scouts here . . .

@jcrasnick
Cuban CF Dayron Varona is expected to draw lots of scouts for a showcase Tuesday in Delray Beach, Fla.

@jcrasnick
Varona, 26, has a .312/.376/.470 slash line in 407 career games. He was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in Cuba Serie Nacional.

Agreed. I was just reading about him a few nights ago and thinking he really seems to make sense for us. I like that he's a right handed bat too because we are getting lefty heavy again (considering both our current roster and projected future at third, etc).

If this ends up being 7 years, I think Nats will hate the contract near the back end of it. Isnt he already 30?

I am more concerned about what the Nats get back in the trade to follow (likely to trade Zimmermann they say). Rizzo has made some great trades in the past, so he may get a great return. If he does that could effect us a lot more than basically trading out Zimmermann for Scherzer. Time will tell.

I would be pumped if WSH gets Max... a contract like that will set them back by the time we're trying to be relevant again

The decision looks really well timed. You have to be lucky and good. Looks like we are getting a bit of luck.

Why not just pay JZ if you are Wash.

Hes better than Scherzer imo and shouldnt cost as much to sign i dont think.

BTW, I noticed than one team had an offer out to Johan Santana who has interest from "six or so" teams, but likely only on a minor league deal. Personally, I always liked Santana and though he is probably close to done. I'd still be willing to give a veteran like him a minor league deal to compete in spring training with Wandy, Wang and our young guns.

I'd pay him a ML guaranteed contract and run him out there every time possible if he would just teach our staff change up secrets for a full year.

He could certainly help mentor our young staff, but given his injury history no one is likely to offer more than a minor league deal. I do wonder if we might be among the six or so interested teams. FWIW, Bowman tweeted this after we signed Wandy: @mlbbowman Rodriguez would likely not be the only vet pitcher the #Braves bring to camp with a Minor League deal and chance to win the 5th spot.

Max Scherzer to the Nats update from MLBTR: "The deal is “close” but will not be completed tonight, Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post tweets."

MLBTR update on Scherzer to the Nats: "The Nationals have agreed to sign top starting pitcher Max Scherzer to a seven-year deal, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman tweets. Scherzer is represented by Scott Boras. On Sunday, CBS Heyman reported that the Nationals and another team were talking with Boras about seven-year deals for Scherzer, with the Washington Post’s Adam Kilgore later reporting that the two sides were close to a deal."

I'll be interested what he got.

He turned down 6/144 before ST.

7 years, 180-200+ mil would be about right.

So the Gnats rotation now has Scherzer, Strasburg, Zimmerman, Fister, Gonzalez. Good grief. Washington has no excuses for not making the World Series this season.

They said before signing him that if they landed him that one of Zimmermann, Fister or Stasburg would be traded. Zimmermann is the most likely to go according to reports.
