Official official offseason thread

This is gonna be the new norm. So AA will have to give out a 10 year deal at soke point to lower the luxury like these teams are doing unless MLB changes rules.

Unlikely he'll go 10 years for a FA just because other teams are doing it. He'll keep doing what he's done and that is that.

FG and Sporttrac have the Braves 2024 Luxury tax payroll number dropping down into the $135m-$140m range in 2024. So if the Braves decide to remain close to the luxury tax for that season, they would have room AAV-wise to do so.

Here are a few notable free agents:

Starting Pitchers:
Max Scherzer - player option
Shohei Ohtani - not happening
Marcus Stroman - Player option
Charlie Morton
Hyun-Jin Ryu
Martin Perez
Yu Darvish
Eduardo Rodriguez
Miles Mikolas
Blake Snell
Aaron Nola
Carlos Carrasco
Julio Urias
Noah Syndergaard
Sonny Gray
Mike Clevinger
Jordan Montgomery
Lucas Gioloito
Jack Flaherty
Sean Manaea - Player Option

Shortstop:
Brandon Crawford
Amed Rosario
Nick Ahmed
Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Outfield:
Joc Pederson
Charlie Blackmon
Cody Bellinger
Hunter Renfroe
Joey Gallo
Ian Happ
Randal Grichuk
Harrison Bader
Michael Taylor

Dipping under the tax threshold just in time for a horrid crop of FA.

Good grief. That is a heaping pile of garbage to waste money on. Almost makes you wonder if the smarter move was to just over spend this year while there were good players. Only thing left now is average Dansby.

Guess we can lock up a few more players.

Agreed, that's why I posted that. My guess is that with Morton possibly retiring or the Braves not picking up his option, we could splurge a little in the rotation. My guess would be Flaherty if he has another so-so season. AA loves those prove it deals.

He could go after Darvish or Snell or Nola. We know for a fact he won't be anywhere close to Ohtani.

We don’t have any more trade capital at this point. we used all of our assets on Murphy and the reliever. We definitely can’t trade from our pitching depth.

I guess you missed the key word in my post: “somehow”

I still wouldn’t put it past AA trading Ian or Elder in the right deal.

I can’t imagine trading our pitching depth with an unknown Soroka and 70 year old Morton. Plus strider will go down just like every other flame thrower every year.

I wouldnt say we're all our of trade assets. Just from the pitching side, we have Ian/Elder/Vines/Shawver. Do have Ritchie and Murphy but i'd imagine given how young they are, they're close to untouchable as we have.

Next years FA crop doesnt look great but Machado can opt out, Baez can opt out. Next years FA crop is basically Devers, Ohtani and Machado if he opts out, and some other guys but nothing great. Do agree it probably made sense to splurge this winter. There's certainly some FA SP options next winter. You have Nola, Urias, Monty, Gray, Snell. Ohtani is probably way out of our range even with alot of money expiring. I'd imagine SP will be our big focus next winter with Fried entering FA soon barring an extension, and Morton probably retiring, and the 5th spot looking dicey unless Soroka gets up to form but he'd be in line for a big payday soon (AA trying to get Soroka on a cheap deal would make sense if he'd take it).

I think we are still in on Dansby and I think Dansby genuinely wants to come back. Of course it all depends on money but if he does come back somehow I expect a deal for Grissom at some point to bring back a young OF. Machado has said he’s gonna opt out so that’ll be another big bat on the market.
