Official official offseason thread

The memory of him jogging nonchalantly to pick up a ball that rolled out to the wall gives me PTSD.

My favorite was when we didn't acquire him until after spring training, yet he refused to take a minor league "rehab" assignment for a couple of weeks to get his timing back or to get in shape. What a dick.

one of my bold perdictions, when that thread gets created, for next year is Soroka has a healthy year that has us remembering the glory days and he signs a 5 year team friendly deal..very team friendly with options. figured I would post this in the spirit of another player being extended.

I don’t think these deals are any more dangerous than anything else going on the market. Obviously the benefit is locking players up on the front end. The unnerving part is that there are just so many of them. The analytics department truly better be second to none.

My wife jokingly asked me last night when sustainability will start to mean locking us season ticket holders into multi year deals.

DOB: Alex Anthopoulos said #Braves "continue to explore things as long as guys are out there" (via FA, trades, DFA, etc). "I wouldn't anticipate anything big, but we'll continue to keep the lines of communication open, and there's still a lot of time before we get started in camp."

So about the usual.

Chafin will likely get multiple years at $10M+ AAV. no thanks.

Yeah it would have to be a case of convincing him to take a 1 yr. deal at a high rate. I don’t think AA is willing to do another Will Smith type deal. It’s telling no one has scooped up Chafin yet.

As an idea for addressing DH if we aren’t going to upgrade LF, what about a hopefully healthy Cron as a one-year rental at DH and a backup to Olson? Could we potentially fleece the Rockies? They seem like a dumb front office.

I would be willing to bet he doesn't get multi year deal of over 10 AVV. he might get a 1 year 10 mill... maybe.. but prob sitting around 7-9 million max if beyond 1 year.

based on what?
he’s been really good two years in a row.
Matt Strahm hasn’t been good since 2018 and got 2/15. likely Chafin tops that.

Strahm was equal to Chafin last year and is younger. Chafin is a middle reliever who is pitching in his 33 year old season with nothing that jumps out at you. Chafin's velo has been dropping every year and sat at 92 last year. Straham is 94 and actually increased after some sort of injury. these guys are a dime a dozen and FO value them in different ways.. but no one is paying him 2/20 or more just because someone over paid for someone slightly younger and comparable.. The market is still flush with average pen guys like Chafin and Jimenez and straham

by what measure were they equal last year? Chafin was better across the board.
he probably gets more than Strahm. no thanks.

not that facts seem to matter a ton but Jimenez was also better than both across the board except for ERA and is also much younger without much monetary commitment.

Chafin has also been good for a few years now (outside 2020) whereas Strahm hasn’t.

I think you are right that I shouldn't have lumped Jimenez with those other two. He is probably better than the other two.. not sure I still like giving up Malloy.. but maybe I will be surprised when AA extends him for 3 years at 6 million per.

my point is only that i think it makes sense to use an asset like Malloy for a good BP arm instead of paying $8m or more for one for 2+ years, which Chafin will clear easily. bad-to-mediocre arms like Strahm are getting more than i’d rather AA pay. i like that Chafin is a lefty though

i’m sure it doesn’t make sense but wonder if Longoria could be an option at DH and to back up 3B now and then? has still been a decent hitter the last few years

Anything that expedites the removal of Ozuna from the roster is fine with me, whether it be Longoria or another former over-the-hill Giant like Brandon Belt.
