Official official offseason thread

Not sure if you've been new to baseball but Kimbrel is cooked. Dodgers probably break the wins record if he isnt on the roster this year.

I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on Kimbrel, but I wouldn’t say he’s cooked. He had an okay year and was legitimately great in 2021. I could definitely see a reunion this off-season.

I fully expect to be worrying about the luxury tax threshold for the first time ever this off-season. Time to brush up on how all that works.

I believe with all the current arbitration estimates we are about 18 million away.

Depends what happens with Odo. We really just have Fried and Minter for arb which is projected to be 18 million as you said. Spotrac projects us at 187 after everything so if Odo opts out, we'd be at 181. That would give us 49 million to stay under the luxury tax, not sure thats enough given what we need, but also depends if AA can move Rosario/Ozuna.

I like Morton but he shouldn’t have been extended for 20 million with a decent SP class

There weren’t many options outside of Degrom that were clearly better than Charlie, and none that would sign a 1 year deal

We couldn’t gone cheap and filled from within with a guy like Elder though.

I think we could have found a 1 year option. Better than Charlie, who knows but think it was a bit of a panic move to guarantee him 20 a year. Verlander would take a 1 year deal at his age, possibly Clevinger/Taillon/Heaney.

AA was on the local radio yesterday and said that they are set at 4 of the 5 rotation spots, with Soroka/Elder/Muller/ etc. to compete for that 5th spot. I'm assuming that he is thinking Odorizzi will be back? He mentioned the reason they signed Morton was for the team control for next season and the year after. He mentioned that all of the analytics pointed to him still having the ability there, but with the offseason not being normal, it threw him off for the whole year. He feels that with a normal offseason, Morton, Soroka, Acuna, etc. will be back in form next season because they don't have to rehab the whole offseason.

It sounds like Verlander will probably opt out of his current deal, but will probably stay in Houston, similar to what Morton has been doing here.

If Odorizzi opts out of his deal, I wouldn't be surprised to see AA go after a TOR pitcher.

Fried
Wright
Strider
Morton

Don't see where Odorizzi fits unless AA wants a veteran to compete for the 5th spot/long man role. I would think he could get more money and a near-guaranteed starting role elsewhere for more than $7MM, which would make opting out the better deal for the player.

I personally think his best bet is to opt out. He can get a 1 or 2 year deal elsewhere.

I dont think Odo opting out would change much. We have 4 spots locked up, with Soroka, Elder, Muller, among others to compete there. I think Odo could get like a 2 year/16ish deal or so which with the opt out would give him 20+. Probably best for both sides if he does.

I think Soroka and Anderson will be the main 2 fighting it out for the 5 spot.

So we’ll be 7 deep with the loser of that battle in the projected AAA rotation. I think 2 of these guys could be traded.

I wouldn’t mind putting a couple in the pen, maybe Tarnok and Dodd

Muller
Elder
Tarnok
Shuster
Vines
Dodd

Could attach one of them with Ozuna to free up some payroll.

Hope Dansby signs back up. Been pondering having Nimmo in LF and leading off (with Acuna batting second). Keep Grossman as the backup corner OF. Nimmo could play CF when Harris has the day off. Would that work with the rest of the Braves coming back?

MLBTR has posted the breakdown of the SS market: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/10/mlb-free-agent-shortstops-2022-2023-preview.html

They haven't released FA projections, but my guesses for the Top 4 contracts:

Correa 10/325 - No QO attached and will be looking to get close to Seager's 2021 deal
Turner 8/260 - QO attached and will be looking to get similar AAV to Seager/Correa
Xander 6/200 - QO attached and I think teams will see him as lesser than Turner since he will have to move off SS soon
Dansby 6/145 - QO attached and will be looking to beat the Baez/Story deals from 2021

I say no way to Xander. Correa and Turner are likely too expensive.

I could see Dansby being the guy holding out for $200M and be left with nowhere to go, but he could also be viewed as the "best value star" and get $150M+.

We really screwed up not grabbing Drury at the deadline or the off-season . I think a few of us were calling for that one both times
