Official official offseason thread

Mets are dumb getting these 40 year olds and paying record salaries. I know JV had a good season but at his age he can’t keep it up.

Good news for us bc both Verlander and Scherzer at their age won’t last. I’m glad they didn’t get Rodon instead.

I’d rather the Mets sign Verlander than Rodon. When healthy, Verlander is better right now, but that deal could blow up at any moment given his age. Plus this is the Mets after all. Rodon is 29 and a much better chance to be great for a longer period of time.

High annual value, but short term deals. It's pretty smart actually. If it doesn't work out they aren't burdened with a bad contract for 4-5 years like we are with Ozuna.

The Mets are very fortunate they have the richest owner in baseball who is willing to run out a payroll well over $300 million. This team wouldn't even be competitive if they had the Braves payroll

WIth the additional playoff spots fans need to look at team building differently.

Its all about getting your squad to be the best playoff team possible. Verlander probably only makes 25 regular season starts but Mets will have plenty of reserve to ensure they are a playoff team.

ZiPS projects Verlander for 7.6 WAR the next two years. Using napkin math at $8m per WAR, this is essentially a 40% overpay. I guess that’s what you expect when you combine the Cohen premium with the short contract premium.

Btw… any good player the Mets add is a good move for them. That team doesn’t play by the same cost principles as the rest of the league.

On paper that strategy looks good. But Verlander has never been a dominant post season pitcher. And look what happened to the Mets big 3 aces in the postseason last year.

I doubt this hampers the Mets whatsoever. They replaced one of the best pitchers (when healthy) with one of the best pitchers (when healthy). And they're probably not done. Meanwhile, the wait continues to see if Atlanta will improve a LF situation that really needs improving, whether we will basically punt SS, and whether we will tighten up a bullpen that could use some deepening.

I was listening to MLB Network Radio this morning and they brought up an interesting point about Verlander last season. Verlander only pitched on 5 days rest about 5 times last season. Every other start had at least 6 days of rest because it came after an off day in the schedule or he was pushed back to give him extra rest.

It will be interesting to see how the Mets handle him throughout the season.

Feels like we’ve heard this before recently.

Mets last year weakness the bullpen. I don’t think adding Verlander is going to make them any better. You can’t have Díaz coming in from the 8th inning to close the game. The season last 162 games. They still need to add another starter and more pieces to the bullpen. Plus the lineup is not that great.
