See when you say it like that it makes a lot of sense. Problem is to get Cole we’d have to give up a draft pick and commit that $25 mil a year to him for 5-7 years. That’s what makes the proposition much less appealing.

Yes, why would we want a guaranteed ace when we could let AA blow another draft pick on a sure bust? You can probably give him a little more per year if he agrees to make the last few years of any deal, option years.

Pretty ****ing hilarious how you people think Cole is gonna get $35+ Million a year. Harper and Machado couldn't even get close to that and they were both a few years younger. Cole will be looking at $25M a year and the Braves need to do it. Just take what you'll save by letting DK and Julio walk and give it to him! Then you can round out the rotation with a guy like Newk or Anderson when he is ready.

Cole
Soroka
Folty
Fried
Newk/Anderson

wanna bet?

What? Machado and Harper sacrificed AAV for total money. Looking at the deals Kershaw, Greinke, and Verlander have gotten recently Cole will get around 35 per year.

Machado was lucky to get the $30M a year he did. Only the Padres are that dumb. Harper was forced to take 3 extra years just so he could say he got the $300+ Million he wanted.

If Cole signs for only 5 years it will be for something like ~35 per. If he goes for 6+ years it will be for ~30 per.

Don’t let the aggressively ignorant posters influence what you already know: the Braves aren’t signing Cole.

Besides. Will anyone want Cole after he gets lit up tonight?

The thing that really smart teams actually do is to identify the next Cole and fine tune their pitches instead of paying for the work a team did.

Another way to look at it is this: Flowers and McCann were around a wRC+ of 89. Grandal upgrades that by 32. So we can downgrade from Donaldson's 132 by 30 at third base and still be ahead of the game.

Grandal is the single most logical target for us this off-season. Doesn't mean that we should go nuts on price or years. But it would be a very nice fit.

I'm not quite sure what opening day payroll is going to look like, but if they just run everyone back they're sitting at about 100m right now. If that opening day payroll is something like 125m, then Grandal might be (like Donaldson) the only major move the Braves make in free agency. So I'm not sure you have a whole lot of opportunity to add that bigger piece at 3B.

You'd basically be hoping for that production to emerge organically.

I still would like for them to explore trading some pitching for controllable position player talent.

What position? Our best internal positional talent are two infielders (Riley and Shewmake) and a couple outfielders (Waters and Pache).

I think we can stretch for both Donaldson and Grandal if we pass on Teheran and go cheap with respect to the rotation.

I will pay your Chopcountry membership dues if Cole gets 35 million or more on AVV. He'll need to get 7/245 in order to do that. Certainly possible, but I don't see it. I'm gonna guess 7/220. Barely breaking Price's record for pitchers.

Do we have much evidence that the Braves are an organization that is particularly good at doing that?

That's what we hoped would happen with Gausman and not much changed with him. (Not that Gausman was anywhere near as good as Cole).

These things sound nice in theory but until you have actual evidence of it happening in reality, then there isn't much reason to expect it.

Donaldson at 23 and Grandal at 20.

Cut Teheran and you're basically at 90m. That's puts you at about 132, which means you are going with pre-arb or scrap heap on the pitching to maintain even a semblance of flexibility.

Yup. That would be my plan A. Plan B would be one of Donaldson/Grandal and having a bit more $$ for a starting pitcher.

Grandal, Moose, and a trade for say Marte would be a better use of the money honestly and give us a better lineup

So I know this is outside the box but if we re-sign Donaldson and add Grandal would it then make sense to move on from Freeman. I feel like we could get a lot of value back in a trade and could use Grandal at 1st to keep his bat in the lineup on days he’s not catching. Maybe look to sign Kendrick to split time with Grendal there.

So you are looking at

Acuna
Albies
Freeman
Donaldson
Grandal

Markakis
Swanson
Inciarte

(Duvall, Riley, Pache?)

Yeah, that probably works from a hitting standpoint.

Soroka
Fried
Folty
?
?

Melancon
Greene
Jackson

....

Solid start of a pitching staff, but the devil is in the details. Braves got very little out of the internal options to fill it out last year. And of course they Braves also had awful luck. If it repeated season go

Yeah those ?? in the rotation are really big question marks. As I posted earlier we could fill them a number of ways:

1) 2 young uns
2) a scrap heap project like Anibal
3) Newk given another shot in the rotation
4) Trade for a pitcher who is controlled at a low salary

Please for the love of god no more Markakis. I’d be much happier working a Joyce/Duvall platoon in LF
