I know Bill Shanks is who he is, but as far as I can remember he doesn't often go out on a limb like this.

Not sure why Shanks buried these two paragraphs --

"Beck would likely take a significant cut from the slot the Braves are allotted with the fifth selection. It could be similar to what Atlanta did last year with Ian Anderson. They got the player they coveted in Anderson, who had arguably the highest upside of any pitcher in the draft, and they saved money which was later spread out to sign other high upside players, including Joey Wentz, Kyle Muller, and Bryse Wilson.

Most believe the Braves’ draft strategy could be more balanced this year, after having two straight drafts that focused heavily on pitching. Atlanta’s pitched depth in the minor leagues could allow the scouting department to select more position players this year."

Well at least he told us who the player the Braves are rumored to want this time rather than calling him a mystery player to avoid being called out for knowing absolutely nothing.

It's a weird position for me to be in to root for Shanks to be right about something, but here I am.

I'm struggling to see why someone within the Braves would give this info to Shanks though. Why does it benefit the front office to have the info out?

On the other side, Shanks seems like someone the Braves front office knows they can use as a pawn, so they feed him this info as a smokescreen for who they really want.

Shanks had a good source pre-wren

...which seemed to dry up once Wren became GM...maybe he has a source again...im hoping for Royce Lewis or Beck

Bill Shanks has seemingly good ties to the FO /Scouting department so I trust this report.

He's an ass, but he's an ass with solid sources.

This is mostly where I land, but again, why would they give him this info to write if it was true?

Why would the Braves need a smoke screen? you can't trade up in the draft.

no one ahead of them is going pick Beck because the Braves want him. They'd only pick him if they wanted him.

I think it has more to do with players than teams. Say the Braves want Adell at 5, but he is asking for full slot. What's the best way to get him to drop his ask? Leak that you're zoned in on Beck.

Again, I'm completely speculating here. It just feels really weird to me for a team to leak who their target is two weeks from the draft.

The Mystery pitcher was Zack Greinke. That whole thing was based on Greinke coming to Braves spring training while he was on hiatus from the game.

The guy I want now is Lewis. He supposedly has the best work ethic and character in the class and put up a nice batting line facing some of the most talented high school talent of any region in the country. Adell supposedly didn't face a single pitcher who'd be better than a JuCo arm according to pipeline podcast which is a huge part of his absurd batting line this year. I think Lewis has the highest upside of all the position players in this draft according to multiple sites including baseball america.
