"Then the money would be used to aggressively pursue someone with their pick at No. 41, perhaps injured Stanford starter Tristan Beck."

That means the Braves have a deal in place with him to you?

You're not going to get someone to report "the Braves definitely have a deal set in stone with Beck" before the draft. That's just common sense.

My guess is all of baseball knows what it will take to sign Tristan Beck. He and his agent probably have a set price regardless of draft slot.

Q. Is the handshake agreement between Kevin Maitan and the Braves a firm one, or is that something that the Cardinals could get into at some point?

KEITH LAW: I mean, obviously Atlanta denies that it exists. It’s also the worst‑kept secret in baseball, and part of why I keep talking about it, too, is that it’s an open secret and it just reveals how corrupt the whole system is down there, that a player who’s not eligible to sign or even have an agreement with a team clearly has an agreement with a team.

My understanding is that at one point Maitan and/or his representative broke an agreement with Atlanta, agreed to another number with a different club, and then Atlanta came in and offered more, and then they went back to the original arrangement just with a higher dollar figure. So it says to me if somebody calls tomorrow and says, hey, here’s $8 million instead of the four and change supposedly that Atlanta has offered, why wouldn’t Maitan and/or his people take that deal? They are not legally bound to anything right now. Major League Baseball cannot enforce an illegal agreement, so why wouldn’t they just switch it up if it’s that much more money? I don’t know if the Cardinals or anybody else would do that. I think I said in a chat recently, if I were a Major League GM because I sort of like lighting things on fire, I would do that. I would call and absolutely dare them to turn down $8 or $9 or $10 million because it sounds like he might be worth it. I’ve only seen video and it’s a hell of a swing, but I’ve also talked to many scouts who have seen him, and they all say in some way or another, hey, this kid is the real deal.

Just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly -- you're using an international player signing as an example to prove your point about the MLB Draft?! Ha.

Just to make sure, did you channel your inner Enscheff? if so I will begin stalking you too.

Beck under slot at 5 to sign Beck over slot at 41 will kick off a whole string of BPA arguments. If Lewis is BPA based mostly on "certainty" and will cost full slot, but Beck has equivalent tools/ceiling to Lewis but is ranked lower due to being more "risky", can we be upset that the Braves went under slot and passed on BPA?

What if the pick is Beck over McKay, a guy most around here want the Braves to skip even though he is considered BPA at that point?

I consider Beck BPA at 5, so if we take him, sweet.

"You're not going to get someone to report "the Braves definitely have a deal set in stone with Beck" before the draft. That's just common sense."

Your quote was that nobody was going to report that a handshake agreement was set in stone before the draft. That's simply an example of an industry source reporting that the Braves had a handshake agreement in place with Maitan - just as you guys and "the guy at Tomahawk Take" are inferring that the Braves are the team that has a deal in place with Beck.

I hope you're right - I just prefer to hear it from someone who's more likely to have talked to someone in a position to actually have first-hand knowledge of the situation. When Callis, Law, Mayo, etc. actually says they've HEARD that rather than hinting that the idea makes some sense, I'd put more stock in it.

Just provide one quote from someone other than a fan on a blog or message board that states that the Braves have a deal in place with Beck. "The guy at Tomahawk Take mentioned it" just doesn't quite cut it for me, sorry.

I have no idea what Tomahawk Take even is, so I'm not sure why you're bringing that up to me.

I'm pointing you to trusted publications like BA and Pipeline both mentioning a link between the Braves and Beck. If you don't want to believe that there's a chance of it, then that's fine. Just don't act like there's wild speculation about this for no reason.

OK, let's piece some stuff together...

McKay goes #1 to the Twins.

"Greene is No. 1 on Cincinnati's list and should be available", so they take him #2.

"The Padres appear to like Gore and Lewis more than McKay (whom they would send to the mound) and Wright", so they take Gore at #3.

"the Rays would look at Wright and several outfielders (Lewis, North Carolina high schooler Austin Beck, Kentucky prepster Jordon Adell, Virginia's Adam Haseley, Alabama high schooler Bubba Thompson)"

So if the Rays skip Wright in favor of a position player like Lewis/Beck/Adell/Haseley, does Wright drop to the Braves at 5? How excited would we be about that development?

Good synopsis.

I'd be really happy with Wright. I watch a lot of SEC baseball and think really highly of him, and I'm pretty clearly in the group that thinks we need more bats in the system.

It would be amazing if Wright fell to us. But I don't see it happening. 1 of Gore or Lewis should be there though.

Wright or Greene would be the only pitchers I would be ecstatic about. I'd be happy with Gore but would prefer Beck or Lewis. Hasley just feels meh...

Thrilled and disappointed both ha. Wright is a fantastic talent to get at 5, so thrilled. But I also really want a high-ceiling bat, so a bit bummed that it didn't fall in such a way as to force us to go that route.
