Who is underachieving?
2014 vs. career (OPS+):
Gattis 131 -118
Freeman 138-127
La Stella (not applicable)
Simmons 79-87
Johnson 87-104
Good Upton 138-121
Bad Upton 73-97
Heyward 108-114
Gattis, Freeman, and Upton are exceeding their career averages, understandably so.
Heyward and Simmons are pretty close to career averages, slightly below.
Bad Upton and C. Johnson are below career averages, but is there any good indications that they would meet or exceed career numbers in 2014? Certainly not with bad Upton. CJ, there may be an argument for, but with his massive career year last year, its almost a guarantee that it would even out this year.
The offense needs a big shakeup, that I'm not sure is even possible.
Teheran/Wood/Minor is a decent starting point, but the rotation will need an upgrade as well. Hard to rely on Medlen or Beachy and you can't expect Harang to maintain performance. Keeping Santana may be a good start.
Bullpen is fine in the backend and will continue to be.
I can't believe you guys are serious about this rebuilding stuff. We're the youngest team in baseball, with plenty of talent. Getting out of BJ's contract would do wonders for sure, but we're just a few pieces away whether that be by acquisition or health.
Really, we're just an offensive underperformance away from being a really good team again.
I think it's a given that Peraza will be in Atlanta at some point in 2015, but probably not to start the year. Whether he is playing 3B, CF, or (in case of injury) SS or 2B is the only real question.
BJ is still a good defensive OFer and a good baserunner. He will never be cut loose because it will always be better to pay him to be the 4th/5th OFer rather than pay him not to play at all. He may be the most expensive 5th OFer in the game, but he isn't going anywhere.
The good thing is that I think this team becomes better if we keep much of this core together next year as well, maybe even get Chipper around the guys. I stick by the reasoning for this team's incredible struggles being related to lack of leadership.
But I think we need too:
1. Resign Bonafacio as a solid ulitity guy to not over take over for guys who get off days but to solidify our awful bench.
2. Get rid of BJ. I know how much money he's owed, but he's absolutely killing this team. Whether it's with his bat, his attitude or his lack of hustle. He's just hurting us.
3. Bring up Peraza to play OF. Let him work out in the outfield to see what we can get out of him. If he's efficient enough, put him in left, Jason in center and Justin in right. Peraza can give us a very solid leadoff guy that'll keep the lineup balanced as well.
4. It's been said, but we need to offer the QO to Santana and see if we can keep him. I love seeing Teheran/Wood/Santana...
5. Sign another quality arm because we can't expect that Meds comes back and is the guy who had a 3.13 ERA last year. If Meds does work out, then we'd have Teheran, Wood, Santana, Minor, Medlen and that's solid.
6. LH reliever and a few more bench pieces. I'd look into 3B to see what we can get. Someone mentioned Headley, I'd look there... maybe even Ramirez?
7. Don't ever bring up trading Simmons or Kimbrel again. These last fews games have shown me just how important Simmons is to us. He's just not replaceable... even with his offense sucking. And for Kimbrel, he's just too dominant. He makes mistakes, but he's by far the best closer in the game, so please stop.
8. This is a good team without any leadership and little to no direction. They're pretty much just kids still... you've got to be patient.
9. I'd keep Gattis at Catcher. Bethancourt will be much better defensively, but this is only Gattis' first full professional year at catcher. It's not exactly an easy position... give the guy some time. lol
Maybe we'll be lucky to see something more like this next year:
1. Peraza LF (R)
2. La Stella 2B (L) (I have an incredible amount of faith in him)
3. Freeman 1B (L)
4. JUP RF (R)
5. Heyward CF (L)
6. Gattis (R) Catcher
7. Chris Johnson (R) 3B
8. Simmons SS (R)
9. Teheran/Wood/Santana/Minor/Meds-FA
Really?? Having the 2nd/3rd worst offense in the league is not a minor nit, its a major problem. Our management has taken your approach... and they've been extremely wrong.
How is that a stupid extension? Its cheaper than what he'd make in arbitration.
The Braves didn't have any trouble non-tendering Kelly Johnson after a season in which he posted a .692 OPS. Johnson is currently at .670. And people who have followed my posts for years know that I wasn't that much of a Kelly Johnson fan. Chris Johnson is the kind of guy who just let walk or non-tender.
I'll get hammered, but we may have to look at trading Andrelton Simmons if we can't get the offense going somewhere else. I think he's regressing as a hitter.
Big off-season ahead.
I'd definitely trade Simmons if the right offer came in. We have several good options to replace him, unlike most of the other positions.
Who would you play at short next season if Simmons is traded.
Tulo would Def be the type of player I'd look at if trading Simmons. The Rockies would have to eat some money but him in the middle order with Upton and Freeman and Heyward would be sick. Not sure if Sale would be available but he's the pitcher I'd look at the hardest.
Lots of talk about Tulo possibly being traded. I know he just hurt himself though. But having him in the middle of the lineup would be sick. And if you call the Rockies and offer Simmons up, they would have to at least take a look at it
