Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

I feel like Byron Buxton could be someone we're looking at. He's is simply not a CFer anymore and I would venture that the Twins would love to move on from that contract at this point. 4/60 (with performance bonuses) is something we could probably absorb fairly easily. And we could potentially move him to DH starting in 2026 if needed to keep him healthy. Maybe we get the Twins to kick in some cash over the first couple of years.

This would be a pretty simple way to improve the OF without having to give up much prospect capital.

I mentioned him to a buddy of mine this morning. I know we've tried for him in the past. The injury concerns are beyond real, but it may be worth throwing him in LF. I could also see him trading for a Varsho type or Gurriel if the Dbacks are serious about trading him. We don't need an elite LF, just a good one.

Or if AA wants to reach back into that Athletic well again, we could target JJ Bleday. Though with them moving to Las Vegas, they may be done with being the Braves farm team.

Yeah, I saw a report saying they have to begin spending and making an attempt to win or they'll be dinged by the MLBPA.

Ideally it's gonna have to be someone who is good enough defensively to cover RF until Ronald returns. Varsho was elite defensively but his offense is pretty mediocre. I suppose if he came cheap he would be worthwhile, but I don't see the Jays trading him. They are trying to compete apparently.

Add Brendan Donovan to your list too.

Bowman posted his latest less-than-factual opinion piece where he says that the Braves are more actively shopping for an outfielder than a pitcher. He also speculates that the reasoning behind this might be that Morton on a one-year deal could be considered more valuable than Eovaldi on a two- or three-year contract.

I think the Braves are definitely letting the SP market play out a bit since we seemingly have Charlie in our back pocket. I doubt Charlie plays anywhere but Atl or Tampa, and Tampa is probably not gonna spend the money on him when they aren't gonna be competitive. Maybe Houston could in play, but I doubt it.

Looks like Correa and Arenado are likely on the move.

Those are legit options for us, although I'd see both clubs eating some real money for any sort of return. (which honestly fits us better)

Where would Arenado play? He can play 3B and 1B... right? Correa, though, that would be a strong move.

I've mentioned Correa several times. Unfortunately, I think we will be using our available budget on OF and SP. But Correa would be a good get depending on how much money Minny would eat and the cost.

Arenado's defense has declined dramatically along with his offense. There really is no reason to trade for him unless you just don't have a 3b option at all. His average EV last year was exactly the same as Urshela's for what it's worth and is on a steady 3 year decline.

In short, Arenado is a terrible option for us unless the Cards decide to DFA him and we can get him for league minimum as a bench piece.

he really is a stretch as a fit ....like a big one. I really was just including vets where the team would likely eat some real money to move them.

So, in going over the Braves luxury tax calculations, Fangraphs has 17.5 milliion in player benefits being added, with a 500k annual increase from now to 2031. I am not sure how or why this gets calculated in, but it is the same for every team.

With Minny seemingly in sell mode, I would love to come away with some sort combination of Correa, Buxton, and Lopez. At least 1 of them would be nice.

Correa would be the play at SS bc Toronto seem to think they have a shot at winning and will keep Bichette. I think the more money they see guys getting the more they are ok with Arcia at SS. And I’m fine with that if we upgrade LF.
