Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

Nothing hot stove but Yankees finally removed their facial hair policy. The dumbest rule in sports is now over.

I was being a bit facetious with that post. The Pads are still a good team that is in their competitive window. So it shouldn't be a surprise they are trying to improve their roster. I think any added benefit of driving up prices for their stars is just gravy on top.

**Adjusted** their facial policy. They still don't want guys out there looking with a beard like Ozuna or Justin Turner.

I think they wanna hang onto King and hope to resign him bc they know Cease is gone after the year. If they do get Quintana then they'll probably lower their price enough to move Cease bc 1 injury to Cease and they'll get nothing.

I mean yeah they probably dont want guys looking like that or Blackmon. Cole with facial hair has aura.

Doesn't Quintana kinda suck?

He's a solid as they come for a middle to back of the rotation pitcher. He's outperformed Charlie over the last 3 seasons and he's 5 years younger. And at this point, he might as well be Zack Wheeler compared to our current 5th starter options.

What do you think it would take to get him

Cheap. Heaney got 1/5.25 but reportedly the Bucs offered Quintana more than that and he balked. Of course he might simply prefer to play for a club that isn't likely to trade in 5 months.

Maybe 1 year at 10 million.

Quintana has posted the following xwOBA and IP stats the last 3 years:

2022 - .304, 165 IP, 4 fWAR

2023 - .329, 75 IP, 1.5 fWAR

2024 - .327, 170 IP, 1.0 fWAR

He was an inning eating #2 at his peak, and has declined to a #5 who may not even be able to eat innings at the age of 36. He is now that SP who holds out into ST, and those guys almost always have terrible seasons once they finally do sign. I'm not sure he's better than just throwing Holmes or AJSS out there. At least they have some upside.

I think the plan at this point should be Cease or just roll with the AAAA arms and see if any of them can pull an Elder for a couple months.

I like “Pull an Elder”. I think that’s the plan for the last 2 spots in the rotation and in the pen. AA has gone with a quantity over quality approach hoping we have enough pitchers to “pull an Elder” to get us through the season. That might work if we know when to move on to the next guy
