Olivera traded for Kemp

Definitely "the question" as far as I'm concerned. I'd think that answer lies in whether they'd be able to spin one of them in another deal to stockpile more pieces. Or whether they'd be able to get enough pieces from us to fill holes and start Mallex in AAA until they could possibly move Kiermaier.

Say Coppy & Co. were willing to move Mallex, Adonis and/or Rio, Sims, and a lower-level arm like Ellis (or someone that's not considered "elite" by our guys). That would give them their "replacement" for Longo (platoon), 2 potential near-ready rotation pieces, and Mallex to "tuck-away" for a short period. If they're still going to "wheel-and-deal" like they always have, I'd think they could easily turn Kiermaier and one of the SPs they have little control over into something like Chance Sisco and Trey Mancini. The Os could then slide Jones to a corner and would get a SP they so desperately need.

In that scenario, they'd turn Longoria, Kiermaier, and a short-term arm into Mallex, Adonis, Ruiz, Sisco, Mancini, Sims, and Ellis while saving quite a bit of $$$.

I like it. I'm getting a woody thinking about Longoria at 3B for five years. (No homo) I'd then want to sign or deal for one 2-3 SP and a RF.

Then we're talking about a Smyrna Braves club we can be proud of.

I wouldn't like it any more than anyone else would, but if we couldn't quantity over quality them with Ellis and a Gant/Jenkins/etc. type to go with Sims, I'd go as far as to include Fried with Lucas if that's what it took to get it done. That's the flexibility we gained with grabbing all those arms this summer. Even if you dealt Sims AND Fried, you'd still have Newcomb, Allard, Touki, Weigel, Povse, Anderson, Soroka, Wentz, and Muller as potential fast-movers if the light comes on plus high picks next summer - and not a LOT of pressing needs for bats at the MLB-level before Albies, Peterson, Riley, Acuna, etc. will be ready.

Yeah, but that's a fairly garbage package overall.

Don't get me wrong - I completely understand (and don't completely disagree with) the other side's desire for cheap offense, but it's always been far easier to trade cheap arms for cheap bats, and I'm just not convinced that'll EVER change.

Entirely the reason I mentioned the option of including Fried if the pot needed sweetening. Always an option when you have tons of arms - not so much when you don't.

Fried is untouchable to me. He broke out in the second half and may be our highest upside arm in our system.

That's the $64,000 question to me - if you believe in the rest of the pitching that's coming and including him could get you Longoria, would you really pass???

Not sure I could.

I'm not against trading for Longoria. I'm against trading Fried. There's plenty of other permutations of a trade that qualify.

Really all I'm saying - if "push came to shove" and I could keep all our other "elite" arms by including Max, I don't think keeping him would get in my way. JMO though.

I would be hesitant to go after Longoria. He's set right now as about a 3.5 WAR player, and he's now 30, so that could start to decline even further.

He's still good, but he's certainly not great, and I don't know how much longer even that is going to last.

I'd never argue that either - but only if you believe an Adonis/Rio platoon can produce similar results over the next 2-3 seasons. And I'm not so sure they can't.

The problem in that situation is that Ender and Mallex are far too good to be 4th OFs over that period to not take advantage of their value.

JMO.

A 4th outfielder can get a lot of at bats. Usually a primary pinch hitter. Backs up 3 positions. We need those at bats to be taken by a decent hitter. If we arent going to have multiple all stars in the lineup we need to have top quality depth. It might also be better to wait until the trade deadline so we have something to trade then other than prospects. We will have a better understanding of our needs at that point.
