Padres fire black

Managers in Baseball don't really matter much IMO. Maybe a couple of games in the standings. The GM on the other hand has a huge roll.

Totally disagree that managers don't matter much, both GM's and Managers matter just in different ways.

It just seems premature, any way you cut it. I can understand (to some degree) the knee-jerk reaction in Miami when they decided to dump Redmond -- but a manager like Black should have been afforded a longer leash, or, at least, a bit more gravitas. It's still extremely early, and it's not like the Padres are completely, or remotely, out of the race/contention.

I was a fan of many of the moves AJ Preller executed this offseason; the Kemp acquisition, Derek Norris, Shields, Myers, Middlebrooks, etc. The Justin Upton trade was a solid move, although it came at a significant cost to an already heavily weakened farm system. The Kimbrel trade was absurd all around, an absolute heist on behalf of the Braves FO.

It all was a bit reminiscent of Steve Philips' NYM spending spree in the early 00's (Alomar, Vaughn, Burnitz, Trachsel, etc.) Useful pieces, in theory, that never meshed ... for a multitude of reasons.

I'm down to hire anyone as long as it gets rid of Fredi

Black is a better option than most in my scenario

The Padres pretty much totally ignored the defense side of the game signing all these big names. Fangraphs did an article on that noting how that very rarely works out. I would argue that it has made their pitching look worse too, bad defense always does.

Check out where the Padres rank as far as defense according to fangraphs.

Note: That number one ranking is for the worst in MLB.

Anyone else hoping the Padres tank so bad that they go into firesale mode at the trade deadline for the remote hope of getting Kimbrel(and to a lesser extent Justin) back in a trade? Then Kimbrel can go on to a long HoF career as a Braves lifer and we can pretend like this small blip on the radar never happened. I'd give them Peraza and Wisler. If we could bump everyone down a slot I dont think the pen would be that bad.

edit - Scary though, Kimbrel's fastball velocity has gone up ever year in the majors. First year his FB average was 95.4. This year its 97.6 which is half a mph more than last year. Even his curveball gained a full mph this year. Good luck hitting an 86.5 mph curveball.

I don't think there's any question Myers can, and should, hit. But the day he's a major league CF is the day--at age 61--I relace the spikes and hit the ballfield.

There is something to be said for acquiring as much talent as possible and letting manager figure it out. If they are offering below market deals to obtain Myers, Upton, Kimbrel; then I can understand it. However, to me they offered market rate or above market rate deals for each of those 3 players. So, without getting absolute steals, it makes sense to have some semblance of team building in mind. They have had some injuries like Alonso and Myers and that is part of their struggles. I still don't know why they didn't get a centerfielder instead of Myers/Upton/Kemp.

The real issue is the pitching has fallen off the map for some reason. You can't have your top 3 starters pitch in SD and have ERAs in the 4s.

They are talented though and could be a minor tweak (or health) away from a pretty good run. They do get to play Colorado and Arizona 40 times)

Well said! Bud Black is just taking the fall for the front office screwing up. The Matt Kemp trade and many moves they made this off-season have not worked out.

Trades that have literally depleted their farm system....Padres are in a really bad spot right now folks...The GM needs to be canned too...I would have fired his @ss for the BJ trade alone...

In fairness at the time of BJ he traded 2 bad contracts for one and the best closer in baseball. No one predicted and his career in no way indicated what Mayben was to become

I was in favor of trading Prado for JUpton. So trading what they traded for JUp I think was justifiable. Again, no one knew or imagined that Peterson was to become lead-off hitter and a mainstay of the Braves.

Wonder what Chad Mcdonald has to say about Black.

I have read in the past that they were good friends and that they go way back. MacDonald was with the Indians when Black was finishing his playing career and working in the Indians front office and was a scout with the Angels while Black was the pitching coach.

This could work out nicely for the Braves then.

I guess it would depend on what JS, Hart and Cox think of Black firstly before they'd ask MacDonald his opinion. But I certainly hope that's the case as Black seems the best available to replace Fredi at this point.
