You have to believe in Olivera to be a middle of the order bat to think otherwise. And if that was the case then why did LA give up such a commodity

Sure. But middle of the order bats are the best thing in baseball. Pitching is everywhere right now. IMO the Braves overpaid on the hopes that Olivera is a legit bat. Not something a rebuilding team should do imo.
But if they calculated right then they get surplus value. Every team has to take risks.

C9nsidering how I feel how about Woods future I don't have strong feelings either way. Maybe there were better deals out there but I don't know how the league views woods future.
It wasn't a great trade but I don't think it was a bad one as well. I like the pick coming back in a very deep draft as well as the upside of bird based on scouting reports. Just wish we could have included someone else other than Peraza.

I remember Ben Badler from BA addressing this question over the Winter. Apparently, it's really difficult for Cuban players to get false papers and fake their ages, names, etc. Very different situation than what you see with other Latin countries like DR. So at least on that front with Olivera, we should be safe.

Wood has been one of the 40 best pitchers in baseball over the last 2 seasons. Producing numbers similar to guys like Clay Buchholz, Francisco Liraino, and Shields. But was under team control. If other teams in baseball didn't see that value, then **** them and you keep him.
In the end the Braves were truly in desperate desire to sign Olivera, that they paid a premium to basically avoid his signing bonus.
If that doesn't at least get you close, then the value of pitching isn't close to the value of hitting on the market...and we just added tons and tons of pitching in the hopes of using its value to add hitting. So that may not work out so well.
But I would have taken Nick Williams and another piece over Olivera.
