Too early to do that. But in general I expect to find our next closer from someone currently starting in the minors.

What I'm saying is that it is unlikely that the young pitchers will come in and pitch anywhere near as well as established major league front half rotation pieces. In fact, for most of them, it is unlikely they will ever be front half rotation pieces. If they are, it is likely it will be three years or so into their major league career.

Personally, for the right player and at the right price, I don't mind cashing in some maybe in four years for established pieces.

The front office has thus far not made these deals, which suggests that they are only looking to do it on their own terms. They've been mentioned on a ton of guys and have the resources to have brought back any of them and here we stand.

Are they going to get desperate at this deadline? I certainly don't see why they would and certainly hope not.

I think they would clearly say no.

That only frees 10 million in payroll in 2018 and 2019.

Sims is not a premium prospect.

Not clear how that helps them accomplish any goal.

The only recently available pitcher I would've considered trading Albies for was Sale, but even then ... still not sure.
 
Absolutely no way we should be trading for SP. The amount of depth we have coming is unreal. It's not worth it to chase a wild card birth. The division is going to be wide open soon with Bryce Harper leaving for the Yankees.

Then I'd have to pass. If the option vests then they'd still save 30 million. No team is gonna take on that whole contract

I think that is worth trying if we have the funds.

The question would be if the Johns are planning on putting a legit player at 3B that costs decent money or if they are going with Rio/SRod/Comargo/FF. If they are going with the typical John 1B then we can take on some pitcher salary. Tigers don't want to send money so including Kemp would be a great way to make it look like they are not sending money.

In my opening post, my argument was against getting a SP at the deadline but picking one up in the off-season. For reasons laid out in the post.

I think it makes sense to go with in-house options at third for 2018 (including the current Adams-Freeman arrangement). For the start of 2018. But yeah, this is the next area we will probably have to go outside the system to fill.

There is a sequencing of sorts that I have in the back of my mind. Pick up someone like Verlander this off-season. Trade Teheran (or some other starter) for a third baseman next off-season (might not be a one for one trade).

2019 rotation would look like this: Verlander, Folty, Newcomb, Soroka, Gohara

infield would have: Freeman, Albies, Swanson, Acquired Player

outfield: Acuna, Inciarte, Kemp

I think the ONLY arguement for doing a deal now is if Sonny Gray is being dealt for best offer now. You can't wait until the offseason b/c he's gone.

If guys are up on an auction block in a no reserve auction you should bid. Maybe you get lucky and you get the 100K car for 75K. Happens on TV all the time :). You just can't get excited by the bidding and go over your budget.

Gray's timeline doesn't really fit us. I think he's going to sign with Brewers long term b/c he has such a close relationship with their coach. I just don't want to spend a bunch. But if Beane says he has to go and the Dodgers and Astros feel like they are too good to pay anything....you might be able to get him cheap. If the Mariners think they have any shot then we can get him cheap. If Lewis as sometimes top 50 lands Gray by himself then we're in the price range I'd consider.

Gray WILL likely be gone by the off-season. But there will be other starting pitchers available.

The other reason I like the Tigers mega deals (Verlander, Fulmer plus Zimmerman, Fulmer/Verlander, etc) is that we can send them Kemp. They could use Kemp at DH...don't need him or want him but it's plausible. IF the tigers don't want to lose face by sending 30 million they can take Kemp and it looks better. Even if we get a Tiger pitcher who is not good, I'd rather have that type of player at SP. He can only hurt us 1 day out of 5. Kemp moving means we could open a spot for Acuna or DPeterson or SRod/MAdams (shiver).

My ideal situation would be that DPeterson gets his power back and he gets to replace Kemp and then at the deadline Acuna takes over for Neck.

I think that is fair. And Coppy should know better than us. Will Fulmer be around? Will Cole be available?

Again....if you can get a deal on Gray, I'm in. If you can't I'm out. Some of Beane's recent trades suggest we could win that trade.
