Playoffs Thread

I'm fine with either the Yankees or Indians. My reflexive disdain for the Yankees subsided with the passing of George Steinbrenner. I've always thought Cashman was a decent GM (who of course has a ton of money to play with). He and Girardi have kind of changed the mindset out there. They aren't the bloated mess they characteristically were when George was meddling.

I have no issue with the Yankees. I admire them. But, this year we have a chance to see two dominant, young teams face each other for the title. And I would hate for of all teams to ruin that to be the Yankees. Add to the fact that the Indians are owed a WS big time, and are as cursed as the Cubs or Red Sox ever were. The Yankees will always be there. The Indians won't, thanks to their small market payroll. Any other year and I wouldn't have a problem with the Yankees winning.

Dusty Baker will leave his starters in for 130 pitches in the regular season and then pulls Scherzer after 98 pitches when he's given up only one hit. I'd be furious if I was a Nats fan.

I'll point to this game every time someone on this board says "tactical decisions by a manager don't make much of a difference".

The Nats had the lead and only needed to get 8 more outs. They had Doolittle and Madsen, two guys they traded for specifically to pitch these innings, sitting in the BP.

They ended up giving up the tie and winning runs with Solis and Kintzler pitching. Neither Doolittle nor Madsen even threw a pitch.

The Nats best 2 BP arms didn't throw a pitch in a game the Nats were winning in the 7th and then lost by 1 run.

Think about how bad that is. I can't wait for someone to write "managers don't affect the outcomes much" next season when Twitker makes yet another boneheaded move.

managers influence to a game is to the power of 10 in the playoffs. I can understand managers making some questionable moves in the regular season because the war is more important than that one battle... but in the playoffs, you only get 3 - 4 battles and you can't make tactical decisions like that in the playoffs and survive... usually.. I mean Bobby did get lucky one year..

I have no doubt Snit could have lead the gNats to the playoffs this year.. but I am equally confident that he would have lead them to an early exit as well.

Managers don't mean that much if/when they are rational. It's more complicated than playing Strat-o-Matic, but strategy isn't that difficult to grasp. It's when they are irrational that it makes a difference. Dusty has always been a lost soul when it comes to dealing with pitching staffs and it showed again yesterday.

Indians have all their catchers, Edwin, Kipnis, Lindor, Ramirez, Zimmer, Chisenhall, Brantley, and Bauer/Carrasco/Kluber/Clevinger/Salazar under control for next year and a good chunk of their bullpen.

It's not their only shot but it might be their best one. Never know what the next year will bring with injuries and such. But their division is so bad next year, they'll probably get one of the top 2 seeds next year.

If Stras isn't 100% it's stupid to start him today. The Nats have to win 2 games, so it doesn't matter which on Stras starts.

Just inept management wasting yet another year of a very talented roster.

A sick Strasburg is better than a healthy Roark. They have to win Game 4 to get to Game 5. If they get to Game 5, they can throw Gio and maybe Scherzer on almost full rest.

Winning 101: You ride your horses not your ponies.

You can't make calculations or plans for Game 5 before game 4. They are a completely different set of variables with which to work with. You have to manage game 4 and 5, like its Game 5... Independent of each other as much as possible.

You have to put all your chips in for game 4, and handle game 5 when\if you get there.
