Postseason Thread

Where is this even coming from? Meanwhile the Mets young pitchers have all pretty much dominated this post season while most other NL "aces" have flopped

Pixie dust plays a bigger role in the post-season. Someday it will land on the Braves and we will all be stunned.

What I hope the Braves build is a pitching staff similar to the Mets with a line up similar to the Royals.

This is why I would still focus on pitching for at least another year in the draft.

The Mets beat the Cubs in the first two games with Lester and Arrieta pitching and deGrom still to come for New York. I'm not quite saying the series is over, but the Cubs are on the brink.

Years in the Wilderness (ie seasons without a post-season appearance) is an interesting benchmark to keep in mind when assessing our own rebuild:

Pirates (21, 1992-2013)

Cubs (17, 1998-2015)

Royals ((29, 1985-2014)

Blue Jays (22, 1993-2015)

Mets (9, 2006-2015)

Each situation is a little different. It should be easier to get back in the playoffs for the big payroll teams, who have the option of adding guys like Lester to supplement their young core. It should be easier for teams who keep a foundational player like David Wright during their rebuilding period.

The Braves are a bit different for having a more extensive core (Freeman, Simmons, Teheran, Miller) at the major league level. I would say our period in the wilderness should be shorter than the above. But I wouldn't be surprised if it were 4 or 5 years.

My basic feeling as well. Pirates and Royals both got in a rough mid-market cycle where they had to unload guys they were building around because they got too expensive (or the risk of arbitration loomed) which sent them back to square two a couple of times. Pirates, Cubs, and Royals have all drafted very well for the past decade or so.

It also helped that they had really good draft slots.

The last time the Braves had a Top 10 pick was Minor. And before that was almost 20 years before that.

It's a hackneyed saying, but it still boils down to pitching; first to get into the playoffs and then once you're in them. Don't get me wrong, you've still got to hit, but it starts with pitching.

Did the Royals draft so well? Here are the picks they made with top 10 picks.

Gordon, Moustakas, and Hosmer are all really solid baseball players. I wouldn't be surprised to see Colon develop into an above-average 2B at some point (but admittedly he has a lower ceiling). Hochevar has been hurt. They turned Greinke into Cain, Escobar, Odrizzi, and Jeffress. Odrizzi (along with their third round pick from 2009 in Myers) was part of the deal that brought them Shields and Davis. That would put 63% of their current starting line-up, a key starting pitcher in last year's run and a solid bullpen guy somewhat tied to their drafting. I would say that's pretty decent.
