BREAKING: Black Lives Matter releases statement supporting Jussie Smollett

"We can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom."

That’s good because there’s lots of other witnesses saying he’s a **** head who faked the whole thing .

Yikes. Good luck with that, guys. Sometimes it’s better to admit that someone you might otherwise support is wrong about something.

I actually read a separate piece on this today. Obviously the headline’s question is ridiculous, but I think the truth of what some teachers are trying to do is a lot more reasonable. From what I’ve seen, teachers aren’t trying to make math “woke” but rather adapt their curriculum to better teach their students the concepts needed to find success with the subject. It’s another scenario where I think race maybe is misapplied, when it’s more of the specific schools and environments where the students are in.

I think there’s a good argument to be made that a simple change in language would get rid of a lot of the debates we have today. Calling it racial equity to teach math differently is going to be naturally controversial, even if the schools where these tools might be most effective are predominantly black. Unfortunately I don’t think anybody is interested in actually coming together to figure out how we can better communicate with one another, because both sides are so sure the other is trying to destroy America or something.

I'm with you on the change in language. If something is branded as being helpful for the lowest earning quintile it will normally have broad support. Like, "hey guys, we have an idea we think will make math less difficult for the kids least likely to get help with it at home!" Barring an absurd price tag, who says no to that? Instead we get "listen everyone, we've come up with a way to make sure 40% of you hate this idea before you know anything else about it!"

5 charges of felony disorderly conduct. I didnt even know that could be a felony. I would be surprised if he gets anything worse than probation.

I read somewhere that the expected sentence is jail time and community service. I won't be surprised if the community service turns into talking to elementary school kids about being level 2 member of the intersectionality chart.

How faking a hate crime is not a hate crime is beyond my understanding. Dude is going to get probation for accusations that would have put someone in prison for a decade if they were found guilty.

He literally disparaged all Trump supporters.

That is the definition of a hate crime.

This is such a ****ty country right now.

I’m guessing legally it’d be very difficult to charge someone with a hate crime when there’s no tangible victim. That’s also probably why a harsh sentence would be difficult. Legally I don’t see how it’s any different than calling the police and claiming you saw a crime that didn’t occur. Without a victim or insurance claim or whatever, it’s just a basic false police report charge, right?

Trump supporters were the victims.

Legally?

Look, Smollett was entirely despicable, and morally you’re right on this. Legally I can’t see the basis for that.

I don't disagree on the legal perspective. Thats why the laws have to change.

It was a modern day lynching of Trump Supporters.

Your latter point highlights why I don’t think it can legally be considered a hate crime unless you really twist the definition in a way that would cause harm on both sides. Unless there was a particular Trump supporter Smollett accused, it wasn’t a lynching. It was entirely fabricated and thus vague, so there’s no specific victim. If he decided to target someone as the fraudulent attacker and that person was arrested or even castigated, I would agree. Smollett preyed on already existing notions of Trump supporters being homophobic and racist, and was rightfully convicted of his gross act.

And those gross overgeneralizations were then further believed by a large percentage of the country.

Significant harm was caused.
