I can understand the point that competitively speaking, the Seahawks deserve the win due to the fumble.

But, the rule is clear and the Seahawks broke the rule. Their are competitive advantages you can have from batting the ball......what if he fumbled at the 10 and was about to recover and the defender batted it out of the end zone? Or a defender bats the ball 30 yards down field to intentionally change field position?

It is not the refs discretion to decide who deserves to win, but to simply call penalties if they occur. That was a clear penalty with a ref staring at the offense. There is no excuse for that.

My contention is the rule about batting in the endzone out of bounds is kind of dumb.

It's not just a general batting rule, it's specific to being in the endzone.

I think all intentional batting should be illegal personally, that way you don't have a question. Doesn't matter if you are doing it to or in an endzone or not. Just don't do it. The rule was made by my estimation primarily when dealing with offensive teams, it's better to have a safety than a touchdown, but they applied ti do defensive teams too because of the same logic. There was no reason for wright to bat the ball, he could have comfortably caught it and ran out the endzone. WOrst case scenario is he funbles it running out of the endzone and it's a touchback anyway.

Just make intentional batting illegal period. Then players will stop or at least act and make it fun to watch.

Again, 100% agreed. I'm simply stating that I don't view the Lions as hapless victims of incompetence other than that of their very own.

PFF OL Ranks through Week 4:

1. Atlanta Falcons (26th last year)

Pass blocking rank: 4th

Run blocking rank: 2nd

Penalties rank: 6th

Stud: What a difference a year makes. He was, quite frankly, awful last year as he played through injuries. But in 2015, Jake Matthews (+5.6) looks like one of the better linemen in the league.

Dud: The only player with a negative grade is right tackle Ryan Schraeder (-0.1), and you can thank J.J. Watt for that.

Summary: What a turnaround. Something you rarely see, Atlanta has morphed its scheme and personnel to achieve immediate results. Mike Person has been a revelation at center, and Chris Chester has proven to be a tremendous free agent pickup. Even Andy Levitre, who looked spent in Tennessee, has fit in seamlessly.

Where is intentionally batting the ball legal?

Don't QBs and kickers kick the ball out of the back of the end zone on high snaps to avoid a defensive TD? I don't see the difference honestly.

Quite the unexpected defensive duel in Atlanta. I have been really impressed with Washington's front seven. Kudos to Scott M.

They just got away with a huge hold at the point of that run by the FB, but yeah other than Freeman running wild they are vastly improved.
