REAL FOOTBALL Thread

Looking at stills of the roughing call and it looks like the right call to me. The defensive players bicep hits Drew right in the neck. If that hit was from the front instead of the side Brees probably would have done a flip. I bet within the next 20 years they are going to put a flag on the QB and defensive players wont even get to hit them.

There was no way in hell that should have been a penalty. Nor the "makeup" intentional grounding.

Yeah, that's just a normal ass hit. The dude is running at the QB and is trying to get to him ASAP. He mostly got his chest. I can't believe they are going to begin calling that these days.

It was a trash roughing the passer call.

Initial contact was clearly at the shoulder...Brees is a weak midget who got thrown back. The real man's arm was at the same plane...Brees just sunk his coward ass downward, which caused the mans arm to caress his neck.

I found a gid in this thread. http://forums.colts.com/topic/23102-roughing-the-passer-penalty-on-49ers-vs-brees/

The gif itself is funny as hell. It looks like Brees doesnt even see him coming and his muscles havent tensed up. The initial hit is to the collarbone area and because his muscles were not tensed his body went one way and his neck the other. The arm definitely hit his neck, but it wasnt where the initial impact was. On the plus side Brees is finally 6 foot tall now.

The gif at the end of that thread is funny too.
I think the gif shows it not a penalty, though.
The Saints played better all game though, that's pretty obvious.

By the NFL rules, that was a foul. He hit Brees in the head with his shoulder pad. Stupid penalty by Brooks. all he had to do was what you're taught to do and break down before tackling and he gets a legit pop on Brees. In 2013 in the NFL you can't hit a QB in his helmet with your fingers, much less your shoulder pads.

Rewatching the near pick 6, I'm shocked that the guy wasn't touched, what was the receiver doing on that play?

Sadly I agree. You just can't hit the QB that high and not expect a penalty. It was a close call but the close calls are going to go to the QB. Sucks because with that play and hte dropped pass by Gore the 49ers could have won while playing like crap.

It's not about hitting high. He hit Brees in the head. It's quite simple even if it's not hard contact you cannot hit a QB in the head while in the pocket.

In the end the Niners only have themselves to blame, the Saints were making dumb mistakes (muffed punt, fumbling the ball on the pick 6, and what was Brees thinking with that pick to Brooks?)

I might need to watch the play again but I didn't see a hit to the head. The hit was around the shoulders but its too close to not call the flag. Was there contact to the head?

49ers should have won but lost. Now they have an uphill climb. My hope is that they get healthy and on a roll and get one of the wild card seeds. Its not a sure deal at this point which is a testament to how poorly Kaep has played hti syear. Really dissapointed.

It didn't matter, there was a WR right below where he threw the ball.

But he threw the ball way out of bounds. If a ball is deemed uncatchable and he is in the pocket isn't that intentional grounding? Maybe I just don't know the ruling.

All the niners need is to make the playoffs. Anyone can get there and get hot. Look at the Giants 2 runs.

Yeah, my last hope is that Kaep just needs a big time possession receiver like Crabtree to be successful. The defense has played great so the offense doesn't need to do much. 49ers need to go back to running more read option.

Nope. That's not the rule.

It is a foul for intentional grounding if a passer, facing an imminent loss of yardage because of pressure from the defense, throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion. realistic chance of completion is defined as a pass that lands in the direction and the vicinity of an originally eligible receiver

I didn't see the play but throwing the ball over players way out of bounds happens frequently. If that's what happened it was a terrible call. 2 things that are almost never called for intentional grounding are sailing the ball over a receiver out of bounds and throwing through of the back o f the endzone.

If thats the case, if the ball slips out of the QB's hand, is it intentional grounding?

He threw the ball out of bounds in the vicinity of his WR. It was clearly a "we just ****ed up" on the 15 yard penalty and we need a make up call.

I think if it slips out of his hand then its more of a question of intention of the pass. I think Brees intention was to throw the ball way out of bounds to avoid a sack. I could see both ways though.
