Red Sox To Acquire Drew Pomeranz From Padres

*If* Pomeranz is healthy, I kind of like him a little bit more the Teheran talent wise and he's arguably pitched better than Julio as well.

But factoring in Julio's contract, I would have to think the asking price had to be higher than what Boston just got.

Except they got a $5 pitcher for the $10.

Way too early to make this claim. It may be a mirage, but he's outpitched Julio this year in a lot of ways. Whether he's a high level prospect turning the corner late or having a fluke year remains to be seen.

Fun with arbitrary end points...

Pomeranz since 2014:

Innings - 257.0

HR - 23

BB - 98

SO - 261

K/9 - 9.14

BB/9 - 3.43

HR/9 - 0.81

BAA - .252

GB% - 45.2%

HR/FB% - 9.4%

ERA - 2.84

FIP - 3.48

xFIP - 3.73

Granted, some of that is out of the bullpen, but if he can maintain those numbers over the next 2.5 years, then Boston will come out of this okay. Espinoza is awesome, but he's super far away and they have a chance to win now.

Yep, and they apparently got Groome signed as well, which helps lessen the hurt on their system as well.

I don't necessarily disagree, and I realize that Espinosa is a long way away, but he's not really that similar to guys we've grabbed.

You are probably right that none of the guys Atlanta has traded for are as good, but I think they have similar arms in the system.

I know that stats are not everything and surely there is a reason why he is so highly rated, but...

he's putting up a 4.38 ERA in A ball, the league is hitting .269 against him and he's not quite at a K per IP. Actually, he has scuffled after a strong start. his frame is less than ideal for a front line starter. A very nice piece, but I don't think a sure thing or a piece that is particularly close.

anyway, I'm not really throwing dirt on him, I just think Boston made a pretty decent gamble. It's a reasonable exchange of assets. I think this pretty much shows they were more inclined to move pitching than hitting. I think people would have been disappointed if the Braves had traded Teheran for a package centered around another pitcher years away from the league.

Yeah... he's than any pitching prospect we've grabbed

Personally I don't see him much different than Touki... they are both very young and raw... if they figure it out they can both be amazing. Both have struggled at times and both have looked unhitable at times.

It's actually an interesting comparison.

They are in mirror in some ways. Espinosa started strong and has been hit hard lately. Touki started rough but has been much better lately.

At the end of the day they both have ERAs in the 4.3 range. Touki has been harder to hit, but has walked more and struck out less (but is trending better). Espinosa has not been walking as many, but is getting hit pretty hard with the league hitting .269.

Roughly the same age, playing at the same level with about the same amount of appearances.

Would be interested to see what full season numbers look like.

Obviously, Espinosa has a higher rating, probably related to his better command and better first season in the minors. Think he has better ceiling on his FB also.

If this is representative of the SP market in general, we need to try to trade Lucas Harrell in the next 24 hours.

What's interesting to me is that I haven't seen anyone who's been so critical of the brass for loading up on young, high-end arms say much this evening.

Which would lead one to wonder why you wouldn't go the extra mile and offer Benintendi and Espinoza for Julio and Vizcaino, no?

There's always the chance that Wren still holds ill will towards the organization and doesn't want to trade with us

LOL what am I hating here that the Braves have done?

Pomeranz is a very talented pitcher... Boston overpaid. Doesn't mean Teheran all the sudden turned into Jose Frenandez

The market is what is. And a pitcher as good as JT with the team control he has is ultra valuable already.

Not all that high on Espinoza. I think Red Sox are smart to trade pitching and not their 2 stud hitting prospects. Theres so much that can go wrong with pitchers.

Now Texas probably gets Rich Hill, and we will end head into the offseason still trying to figure out how our offense will get any better in the future.

Well adding three very good pieces from our own farm is a pretty big help. Given the market for pitching, it would seem it will likely be easier to get a bat than a pitcher.

Not particularly, if those are my two options I'm picking Pomeranz for Espinoza all day every day. People are acting like Pomeranz is some chopped liver, but he's pitched extremely well this season, and added a very effective cutter mid season that has made him a much more complete pitcher. He's also pitched better away from Petco than at home. There are questions about his ability to handle the workload a bit since he's never pitched a ton of innings, but outside of having slightly less innings pitched this year Pomeranz has outpitched Julio. Julio definitely is more safe in that he's likely to pitch well throughout his contract, but Pomeranz arguably has more upside given the numbers he's put up this year.

Not to mention Julio's HR tendencies make him a really bad fit for Fenway. Which is another reason the Rangers probably aren't big on him, he'd be a horrible fit because of that in their home stadium.

I like Espinoza a fair bit, but agree with you 100% here. Red Sox are far better off keeping Moncada and Benintendi, as much as I'd have liked to see them send us one of them.
