Reports: Braves Acquire Jorge Soler And Luke Jackson From Giants

AA just gave up prospect capital to get a guy on a deal he was unwilling to give him 4 months ago.

December 2023: sorry Soler, we don’t think you are worth 3/42.

July 2024: thanks giants, we will give you prospects for the contract we were unwilling to hand out in December.

while not the biggest fan of the trade, but more offense will be nice. Don't you think the injury situation of the team is affecting decisions. They were obviously high on Kelenic during the offseason and thought they didn't need him. Maybe AA didnt have the ok to push past luxury cap penalties but does now. Just think it's a bit unfair to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

I laughed so hard at the Giants for giving Soler that contract. 3 years 39 million. Only overpaid by 30 million...... Now he's our problem. I guess he will be solid but the money is just ridiculous.

Soler hasn't played an inning of defense this year.

It can be argued that Soler has never really played an inning of defense.

Curious deal. Given the status of the team's health, Anthopoulos may just want to get into the playoffs and let the chips fall where they may. Playoffs aren't a total crapshoot, but as we've seen over the past few years with the Braves the unexpected can happen in terms of both upside and downside. The Braves have enough pitching and if the hitters come around and show some level of consistency, they could have success in the post-season. The team just needs to get healthy and hitters have to step up.

I know I've been guilty of being the "glass is less than half full" when it comes to the Braves' minor league hitting prospects, but I liked Ceballos. Hasn't burned up the stat sheet in Rome, but it's his first year of full-season ball and offense is down throughout the minors as well as the majors. I've heard there's a question as to where he'll end up on defense, but he hit in college and in a system that is short on hitting depth I thought he was someone with some promise.

Assuming Soler continues to hit well, he would be a fairly cost effective replacement for Ozuna in 2026. However, he's not a great fit for the 2025 team that will likely need to replace both Fried and Morton.

Hoping we here some news on a pitcher today. It would be nice if that pitcher had some control, like Crochet. But Flaherty is probably my preference based on perceived prospect cost.

So we blew past the last tax threshold for Soler. I like Soler and think he adds another good bat to the lineup and he will probably do better here than SF but for that penalty i hope there is something else coming. 2b and/or a legit SP.

One of the first things that came to mind for me with the acquisition of Soler is what it might mean in terms of picking up Ozuna's option. Soler is cheaper, but Ozuna has been a secular demi-god the past two seasons. There's going to be a big chunk of payroll coming off the books with or without factoring in Ozuna and it will make for an interesting off-season. Anthopoulos' reluctance to go beyond a three-year deal with veteran pitchers might be tested.

Not the biggest fan of this in retrospect. AA is trying to recreate 2021 with Eddie, Duvall, Soler, Jackson, etc without the leadership of a Freeman or Swanson.

I still think the team needs 3 more guys today. Another OF, a middle infielder and a starting pitcher. Anything to rid us of these multiple AAAA guys going every few days and ways to get Luke Williams and other bums off of the roster. I doubt all of this happens though.

I know he barely played last year, but can you imagine if these injuries occurred last year and Charlie Culberson already had over 100 plate appearances?

Dont love going over the threshold for Soler. But didnt trade a ton for him. Certainly will make the offense alot better. If we're already over the luxury tax, then this cant be the only move.

If we feel certain Harris will be back, I think the OF is ok...

Cf Harris
Rf soler
LF Duvall/kelenic

The inclusion of Jackson is the part that confuses me the most about this odd deal. We have a deep pen with a couple of guys in AAA who can’t get a call up. Maybe this could make one of our other relievers available?

This feels like AA is saying look I know I have done a bad job the last few years but hey you remember this.

Now we are saddled with 2021 guys who lucked their way through the playoffs and I really hate it. I mean if they just drop Eddie and Duvall I will feel better.

Try a new stick AA stop bringing back retreads because you screwed up in other areas.

Duvall has killed lhp. Dropping him would be dumb as playing him vs rhp

Duvall vs LHP is fine, him in an everyday role is a problem. But we dont really have a choice with Acuna/Harris out right now.

you guys over estimate twits ability to construct a lineup and deploy a platoon properly. He can't make simple pitching moves, so how can he deploy a platoon properly.

I really hope this year has been frustrating for him and he decides to retire, but I don't see it.

Then again, it could be worse. Would AA just hire another in-house dinosaur?
