Second ('Third') Trump Presidency Thread

For using a wildfire to push a purely political agenda.

The wildfire primarily caused by incompetence.

Seems like trump is just defending Californians.

Who is to say California will actually use disaster relief funds properly. How much did they spend on homelessness again?

Trying to wriggle out of disaster relief for Californians is a weird way to do that.

Not when you understand state leadership is as likely to spend it on a toilet than actual relief.

But why defend the competency of California leadership. Not a road anyone can go down.

I can’t even fathom the cognitive dissonance it requires to think it’s okay to require a political condition to disaster relief a few months after being outraged that some individual FEMA people intentionally ignored houses with Trump signs. Either disaster relief should be political or it shouldn’t. I’d say it shouldn’t, because it’s a slippery slope.

I can’t imagine how someone could actually not want change and lack the concept of leverage.

A Californian might think. It’s just voter ID. Why is it hard to commit to that so we can get help.

Helping actual human beings who might have lost their home in a massive fire is simply not something I’m willing to accept as leverage.

this is the problem. there is never accountability for failure. just bailouts.

Maybe the California Republican Party should do a better job of engaging voters in the state. Or tie voter ID laws to any number of federal programs that aren’t for people who lost their ****ing homes in a wildfire.

This is especially rich given that the state of California essentially funds federal programs for almost every red state.

Maybe a minority opinion around these parts

But I kinda think the federal government doesn’t have a role in either providing disaster relief nor should it dictate state election laws. Is that a hot take?

It’s hard to know these days

Honestly I find this to at least be a good argument. I disagree, in part because I think as long as we even bother to have a federal government, taking care of its citizens in times of desperate need is like the number one thing it should do, but I understand your position.

Everyone seems to be up in arms lately nervous about the overreach of the federal government. Seems like a good time to reflect on how much authority we continue to allow them to have.

I'm more interested in accountability for failure than I am anything at this point.

Also I'm fine with killing the federal red state programs California helps fund

They can keep that money for their houses

I work in software sales that delivers certain training modules. Today, we had major government contractors reach out saying we must remove DEI training content from our catalog for them to be compliant with recent EO.

While my company employees are literally crying about the change, I'm laughing my ass off and demanding our product team expedite by the end of the weekend to ensure compliance
