There’s three things I’d break with much of the left on for immigration:
1) Everybody here would need to have a job or be a student.
2) Short of pre-agreed upon, short-term support for refugees we take in for a specific reason, I wouldn’t allow for those coming to the country to be able to receive welfare benefits.
3) I’d want local governments to work with federal law enforcement on deporting non-citizens convicted of crimes.
The main issue I have with the “deport everyone right the fuck now” effort is that I don’t think it’s the right way to solve the current issue. If someone came here illegally 20 years ago and is contributing to society, I’d like there to be a path to legal residency. Because those paths don’t exist and we’re instead spending ungodly amounts of money on militarized police forces to roam the country looking for factory and agricultural workers, I don’t see a reasonable path being charted on the issue from either side. It is good to know who the people in this country are and if they’re dangerous, and the left needs to concede that point. But we’re not going to see some sort of tremendous societal benefit to simply rounding up hard-working folks either.
