Now you didn't go into the decision with that in mind but you probably walked around the area / checked out the schools / looked at crime stats and there you go! Massive coincidence.....

Weirdly it’s a better area than my previous apartment, yet the “black” population is higher. If I just blindly chose the area with fewer “blacks,” I’d be in a less safe neighborhood. But I looked at data that actually matters, rather than rely on broad stereotypes, because I don’t see the utility in relying on shoddy information when better information is readily available.

This discussion isn’t about whether disparities across groups exist - of course they do. The discussion is whether you elevate the group disparity over the individual’s merit in cases where you have good, reliable data on the individual.
I was told in the immigration thread that it’s impossible to get good data to assess individual merit, therefore a blanket ban is acceptable. OK, I disagree, but I at least see the point.
What I don’t understand is this rigid insistence on ignoring individual merit in real world examples where that data IS readily available. Now I’m being told it’s perfectly reasonable to disregard that information and continue to treat people as median representations of a group identity.

I don't mind grit and complexity. The neighborhood I live in now has some of both.
I have great memories of my time in both Oakland and Harlem. I haven't lived in the Bronx, but have had friends who lived there. All of these places are worth getting to know. They aren't the scary hellholes of popular imagination. After the Germany-Ecuador match I'm going to spend a couple nights in Harlem. Been having fun making plans to visit some old haunts and new places. Harlem holds a special place in my heart.
