Shae Simmons Called Up; Ian Thomas Optioned to Gwinnett

Nobody should mention Beachy or Medlen in the future rotation. It's safe to assume they will never pitch in a Braves uniform again.

Shae Simmons is electric and Thomas just wasn't ready to be at this level. Getting regular usage down in AAA will only help him moving forward.

Think neither will ever be a rotation guy again but both will probably get contracts and play again as bullpen guys. Both are arb eligible which will make Medlen too expensive. Beachy won't be too expensive but considering how he never really came back from the first TJS I wouldn't expect us to offer much.

so do you think they move Simmons into high leverage situations right away? Or use him like they did Thomas?

That answer was quick. I like it too. I'm interested to see if he can keep consistent. I absolutely love his stuff. Amazing velocity and his command was good his first two appearances.

Does he stay up once Walden returns?

I would say yes. Based on what I've seen so far I would use Simmons as the 7th or 8th inning guy. Walden would be the other guy used there. Carpenter would be shifted to some less high leverage situations. Given that he still has options, I would guess Hale gets sent down rather than Varvaro.

Although they haven't done much of it this season, Varvaro and Carpenter were often used in multi-inning roles last year and they could do more of that if Hale were optioned.

From what I've seen, yes. Varvaro is pretty much in the Christhian Martinez role, which this team may not have the luxury to have. My guess it would be between Hale and Varvaro to be dropped. I like Varvaro more than most in here, but he's fringy. I'd be curious to see what would happen if he's DFA'd. If the Pirates claimed Obispo, my guess is someone would take a chance on Varvaro.

Watching Carpenter this year, I get the sad feeling that last season may have been his day in the sun and that he's going to be pedestrian from this point forward. You see that quite a bit with relief pitchers where they can put it together for a half season or so and then regress. Of course, he can throw 95+, so that's always nice to have around.
